I never really thought finding nice bedding would be an issue, but I’m discovering more and more how picky I am. I also feel that variety is at a great loss–especially for twin size bedding! Whenever I look online at Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Macys, Linens & Things, etc…all I find are kids-style twin bedding. Or I find bedding that is really “mature” and overly intricate.

I would really like to find a nice, high-quality duvet cover or comforter (preferably with a high-ish thread count) for college. In a solid color (minty green, pink, violet, aqua blue, etc). It sounds strange, but it will essentially be what I decorate my dorm around and I would really like to find some nice, comfortable, age-appropriate bedding!

If you can recommend any stores or websites, or even specific brands I can search for on eBay, it would be greatly appreciated!

Try [The Company Store](http://www.thecompanystore.com). And if you’re looking for sheets, make sure the sheets are twin XL, which is what most dorm beds are. D bought a full-size comforter, though, since she figures she’ll have a full-size bed after college, and the extra width is nice.

KBaher – I searched high and low last summer for quality bedding for my son and was disappointed in what I was finding. I then stumbled upon the online store Campus Bedding and ordered some things for him. I was really happy with the quality and ordered a few more things, including a featherbed. It’s a company started by 2 moms who were disappointed in their search to find decent linens for their college-bound kids. Now why didn’t I think of this? [College Bedding - Dorm Room Bedding - Extra Long Twin Sheet - Twin XL Sheets](http://www.campusbedding.com/)

It was mentioned above and may expand your choices: Go with a full-size
comforter/duvet. It works nicely with dorm beds and will also work when you move to a full size bed later. Full size will hang down over the sides, but it helps to cover the under-the-bed boxes. The “hang” is also fine if the bed is lofted.

Another couple websites to check are Overstock.com and Smartbargains.com.
I’ve ordered good quality linens from both. Sometimes they have free shipping and one of the sites always has shipping at only $3.95 or so. I’ve also returned items easily and get my accounts credited quickly.

Someone mentioned The Company Store as well. I’ve ordered from them too. Quality is very good although a little pricier than some. Check also Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn for sales or at their outlets if you’re near any.

D ended up using a black/white pattern and changed the sheet color when she got tired of it. S could care less but has a solid blue that he pairs with black jersey sheets–very good choice since he rarely washes them. Ewww.

I bought a nice comforter for S and he never used it. His bed was lofted and, of course, warm air rises, so he was hot all the time. Even through the cold months, he said it was not unusual for he and his roommate to have the window open while sleeping. His comforter came home at the Christmas break and stayed home.

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I’m wondering, though, would it be better to get a duvet cover + a plain down comforter so I can simply wash the duvet and not the down comforter? Or would it be fine to just get a colorful down comforter and wash it?

It would be good to avoid washing the down comforter in a washer and drying it in a dryer in the dorm. If you want down, I think a duvet cover is a good idea.

Also look at Domestications, JC Penney, even Walmart (where we found D’s requested black & white bedding). They have twin and XLT, whichever you find you’ll need.

jcpenney.com has solid duvet covers in a variety of colors and quality is good. I would definitely go with a duvet cover and separate down duvet…so much easier to wash and dry just the cover. You could buy 2 covers and change them alternately instead of rushing to wash and dry.

Try the colored down alternative comforters, it is a pain to restuff a duvet. We switched a few years ago and I would never go back to down. Do be sure the comforter is quiet when moved about, now the coverings are of a softer material. The biggest selection will be this summer when every store is marketing for school.

Also recommend a separate duvet and down comforter…this worked great for my D. She wanted down.

It may be obvious, but even with a full size duvet/comforter, you’ll still want xl twin size sheets (or regular twin). Most college websites will tell you the bed size. I wouldn’t worry about having 2 duvets. When you finally get around to washing it, you’ll be likely hovering over your laundry and won’t really be without very long. I sent both my kids with 2 sets of sheets thinking they’d need an extra set when doing laundry. BOTH kids returned one set of sheets to me. No room to keep them and no need for them, they said.

At home, my kids use comforters with covers. The covers get washed regularly; the comforters less often, and in commercial machines. In college, S2 only uses a medium-weight blanket as the dorm gets hot. I remember that when I was in college, I turned off the radiator because the heat from either side of my room was enough to warm it; and I tend to be chilly! I’d wait until later to make a decision. Whether blanket, duvet or comforter, it won’t be needed for a while.

Keep in mind that students snack on their beds, or dump all sorts of things on them. It’s a real bother washing or dry cleaning heavy bedding.

Domestications twin XL cotton knit sheets are great. Very soft and stand up after many washings. Try putting a soft fleece blanket over your comforter.
It will protect your bedding and will be very easy to wash. Also nice and comfortable.

My son insists on high thread count (and it is softer as we all use it at home.)

Opted out of online purchases.

Bought really nice comforter with pillow sham at Macys in twin size (don’t need a full for a twin long college bed) and matched up Xlong twin fitted sheets (no need for top sheet unless you like one.) We bought Hilfiger items. All high thread count and quality and really nice patterns of comforters and sheets to give the room some color as everything else in the room is pretty bland. Can get costly, but Macys has frequent sales. Macys also carries some “be in the bag” Hilfiger that were pretty nice. (Go to macys.com to check out some options or head to one of your higher end department stores at home to see what selection you have.)

Also, while shopping/scanning at Bed Bath and Beyond we noticed some pretty nice college “bed in a bag” too with Xlong twin sheets. Nice option for lower cost.

We bought 2 sets of fitted sheets/pillow cases.

Towels, I bought those in solids at Target. Waverly Home is nice and thick…just washed them and they are thick and fluffy- does not seem like any wear from the college heavy duty machines.

Good luck and have fun. Pick out something you really like!

And I second marite’s opinion about hot dorms. My daughter returned the heavy down comforter we brought for her dorm and substituted it with a much lighter (almost summer weight) one.
