Hi! I am researching dorms online, but would really appreciate any input from those who have “been there”.

When we toured UT we saw Jester, I think, and San Jacinto. We really liked San Jacinto. My son is looking for a dorm that is co-ed, diverse, and convenient to the new computer science buidling.

So that’s what he wants. I am also looking for a dorm that is clean, safe, with a friendly culture and not too much of a party dorm.

He really wants off-campus but I’d prefer he stay on campus for the first year. I can see him in maybe a co-op for the rest of his college years. I just wish there were co-ops without cats. :-)

My son is in computer science and lives on campus in a dorm. All the dorms on campus are safe and clean. The computer science building is centrally located so there is no dorm that is closer to it. Your son will probably only have 1 class in that building - all the other classes will be spread out in different locations around campus - most of my son’s classes have been in the engineering and math buildings so the dorms in the north end have been closer but getting across campus from location to location is not hard - 10-12 minute walk end to end. From what I’ve heard from my son and other comp sci students the dining hall at the north end (Kinsolving) is preferred over the one at Jester - if that is a consideration. So you also might want to look into Duren.

My son has also been admitted to Comp. Science. I was under the impression that all comp. science classes will now be conducted in the new building. Will the classes still be spread out?

My D also been admitted to Comp. Science, I heard that Kinsolving is good for Girls. But it seems it is far from GDC, walking from GDC to kinsolving is safe?
I think comp sci student work in labs until late night, walking to dorm at nights is safe?
Please share your thoughts.
Is any other dorms are best for CS students?

Yes, computer science classes will be in gdc but your son/daughter will only have 1 computer science class per semester at first and maybe 2 later semesters. All the other classes are spread out across campus in different locations. My son is walking all over campus every day.

Kinsolving is not far from GDC - quick 7 minute walk.

The campus is very well lit at night. My son takes walks every night for exercise all over campus. I have joined him a few times and was happy to see how well lit the entire campus is. There are also lots of people walking around well after midnight - but its always good to remind your daughter to walk with someone - there is also a volunteer organization on campus that your daughter can call and they will come walk with her back to dorm from computer lab.

A lot of CS students use the computer lab - but a lot don’t. My son brought his computer from home and does all his programming assignments in his dorm as does many in his group of CS friends.

There is no particular dorm that is best for CS students. GDC is centrally located - the walk across campus from end to end (walking briskly) is only about 12 minutes.

Thanks for all the help. We haven’t put a deposit down since we haven’t heard about the final FA package and my son is still going to visit another college in April, but UT is sounding like a great option. However, we will deposit as soon as the decision is final, and really I can’t wait for that moment.

I kind of wish the freshman housing options weren’t so plentiful. Penelopelane, do you know if there are freshmen living in co-ops? Would you recommend it for freshmen? Cat allergies are my concern, so it’s great seeing that you were able to work around them.
