Dorm Fridge with a freezer

I am looking to buy a fridge with a freezer to keep under the dorm bed. Height of the bed is 32 inches. Can any one recommend a good fridge with a small freezer under 32 inches? (There is no space to keep fridge other than under the bed.)

Do they want to store frozen foods and a few drinks in the fridge or mostly refrigerator foods and drink? I have found the compacts with two doors are better to keep frozen foods frozen. The one I got with two doors is too tall (33 ½") for you, but check on one or two doors before shopping

You might want to check with the school if such an appliance is allowed.

@NCmom14 - I want one with two doors. My school allows dorm fridges.

Have never seen a small fridge with two doors. Some of them have small inner doors for the freezer compartment that can hold maybe 4 ice cube trays but not much more.

^^And our experience with those is that the frozen stuff doesn’t fully stay frozen. Maybe a Lean Cuisine or something but not ice cream!

Go online and Google your specifications.

My dd had a larger fridge but it was a bear to get down to the storage facility at the unis storage place.

Is it worth it?

We bought a two-door mini-fridge last year for DD. The height was a bit more than the underside of the slat of the bed ( we should have checked the dimensions first  ). Fortunately, the hinges on the top of the fridge are about an inch high, we ended up lifting the bed a bit to slide the fridge under the bed. It hasn’t been problem to open the doors.

Check to see if there is room under the bed for the freezer to slide through and the height without the hinges.

My take is also the freezer on a small fridge is fairly useless. You can buy a compact separate freezer.

Can you buy those “bed lift” blocks that will allow you to raise your bed a few inches more?

Wow. I thought it can be a fire hazard to wedge a unit like that under a surface like a bed.

But Amazon and stores sell a 1.7 cu dorm fridge with a freezer big enough for an ice cube tray or two. 20" tall.

@lookingforward, that’s a very good point. DD doesn’t have that issue this year, she keeps the fridge in the common area in the suite.

@Lergnom, DD used the freezer and it worked well. She could fit in several Trader Joe’s frozen dinner packages in there.

My son also had a two door model that worked so well that other students would store their ice cream in his freezer! Unfortunately, it only lasted two years before it broke down and no one could fix it. Apparently these are now considered disposable items. Of course, the mini-fridge that I had in college 30 years ago is still running and is in use in my basement…

DD has an older version of this two-door model: SPT RF-314SS Double Door Refrigerator, Stainless Steel, 3.1 Cubic Feet. You can do a google search to find it. Amazon carries it and when I bought hers, we found it online at Home Depot I think. It is a little bit taller that what you want, but I would suggest trying to figure out where else you could place it rather than under your bed, if at all possible. You really should make sure it is properly ventilated. The fridge we bought works great and the freezer keeps her stuff frozen. She keeps a thermometer in her fridge to make sure things stay at the correct temp and so far it has been perfect. She has had it for a little over a year now and has had no problems with it. It survived a move to a storage facility and back into her door room. I bought a small, collapsing, lightweight hand truck to use to move it, though its not super heavy and two people could carry it. Its just bulky. But the hand truck was cheap (maybe $25?) and worked great and can easily be stored in her room (it lays flat), or for move-in and move-out it can be taken back and forth to college stored in a large suitcase (which is where we put it), since we have to fly to her college. We also used the hand truck to move the heavier boxes in and out of her dorm room.

DD really wanted a separate freezer compartment for her ice packs (she play a varsity sport and the ice packs come in handy) and for some frozen food. I researched these dorm fridges like crazy to find one that had decent reviews and the one we bought did. It is definitely a taller fridge, so it may not work for smaller dorm rooms, though DD has not had problems finding a spot for it and she has a super tiny room this year. Depends on your space though.

My D has the Heier 3.2 cu ft 2-door fridge (we got it at Walmart). She likes to have frozen items on hand, and this was the only one that I could find that guaranteed a good “freeze” as well as still fitting within the dorm requirements. It is a smidge more expensive than the smaller ones, but she loves it and it has worked out great. It has way more room inside than it looks like! She is able to have several small frozen meals, and pint of ice cream, as well as a couple little trays of ice. And the fridge part is roomy too, she keeps a small Pur water filter pitcher, as well as room for essentials. Definitely recommend!

My D also has a Heier 2 door fridge and loves it. I insisted she get the 2 door model as compared to the useless mini freezer in most dorm fridges.

D is a dancer and likes to lay on her icepack after workouts. The 2 door model actually keeps ice cream and her icepack really cold.
