Dorm insurance - I know there are threads but

what would be considered a “mysterious disappearance?”

We received a pamphlet from the college for NSSI and it states, “There is no coverage for mysterious disappearance (unless stolen), mechanical breakdown wear and tear …”

How do you differentiate between stolen and mysterious disappearance?

It means a loss that is not or cannot be explained. Ordinarily, if your kid loses something, he/she would file a police report claiming it stolen at or near the time when the item went missing. But kids also tend to lose track of things – so basically if your kid shows up home in the spring without the expensive jacket you purchased in the fall, and can’t remember where it was that he last saw it… you probably aren’t going to be able to make a claim.

From the standpoint of the insured, if something important is missing you would want to report it stolen, and in most cases the insurance would cover it – unless the circumstances of disappearance seemed extremely implausible.
