Dorm Life

I understand at SMU there are dorm themes and at Cal Poly there are dorm games. Is there anything like that at Berkeley? Also, are any of the dorms social? If any of you feel like the dorms are social, what exactly makes you feel connected to your dormmates?

There are a couple of theme programs. Wada is aimed at transfers, Freeborn is substance free, I think there’s a women/engineering thing in Foothill/Stern, there’s an African American theme program, and there’s a couple others that I can’t remember. But for the most part, dorms don’t really have themes… they’re just dorms.

Technically each year the dorms have a “theme” within units/buildings… Wada’s this year is somehow Monsters University related, last year I was in a building that was “earth” and my floor was the valley. But the only noticeable result of those themes is the picture on your door, so it’s probably not the kind of theme you’re thinking of. :P

But you’ll be living with these people all year. Yes, you’ll make friends. Everyone is new, they don’t know anyone, and the people you happen to live with are an easy choice when it comes to making friends. You’re all freshmen in a scary new place, and they’ll all want to make friends too! You’ll always be able to hang out, you know where they live, and going to say hi means walking down the hall in your pajamas. It just makes sense to befriend people you live with.

Some floors will be more social than others, but that depends on who’s living there that year… you really can’t predict ahead of time. It helps to keep your door open, though. Go introduce yourself to your neighbors, stop by to say hi to them, be friendly.

If you want the best bet of having a social floor, you’re going to want to sign up for the high rises in the units.
