Two years ago with my older daughter going to college for the first time I had lots of friends on Facebook also bringing kids to college. Yet no one posted photos of the kid’s moved into dorm room. Now, as many of my friends bring their next kids to college, everyone is posting photos of the moved into dorm room. And I’ve noticed a trend to very luxurious rooms decked out with fancy rugs and framed pictures ( no tacky-glued) posters).
So…
anyone else noticed this?
anyone else posted pics or planning to?
3)how luxurious ( or not) is your kids dorm room ?
All of my friends show the dorm pictures to one another. They are certainly not all glamorous. One reason we do it in our group is that our kids go to school all across the county and it is nice to see the different campuses/dorms.
I have seen lots of dorm move in pics posted this week. Mostly it is girls with smiling faces, a new comforter and pillow and junky dorm furniture with cinder block walls. I enjoy seeing the pictures!
Since I have a D who moved in for freshman year last week, I’m seeing a lot of these photos on my FB page (parents) who also graduated and are moving into dorms. I posted one - more tongue in cheek - and on Instagram, not FB (FB feels too public - fewer people follow me on Instagram) - of D’s Instagram picture string across her window/bed.
I don’t mind the photos as long as there is one or two. One FB friend who is always excessive literally posted a picture from outside her hotel room (the parents) with an arrow pointing out her daughter’s room in her dorm across the smallish campus. Really? You have staked her room out exactly and are now FB marking it with an arrow?!! Creepy!
Her room is pretty nice! Cinder block, yes. But roomy. Large double window. One whole length of the long wall is built -ins - closet, drawers, TONS of storage! As my husband said, “doesn’t anyone have stolen milk crates anymore?” - I didn’t see any!!!
Remember: cinderblock means highly resistant to fire. That compares to much construction that is occurring today that does not have masonry walls in between units.
Good point @Charliesch. I don’t mind the pictures. I just an trying to figure out why it’s a thing thus year to post them and it wasn’t two years ago. Even though two years ago facebook was certainly going strong and everybody had the same phone cameras they do now.
LOL @abasket our daughter does have one stolen milk crate in her dorm room. My husband acquired it about 37 years ago, and our daughter found it in our garage and asked if she could have it! Also, she is in a quad that is quite “cozy.” And the girls were more concerned about connecting to WiFi and none brought a stereo, another sign of the times!
I was guilty of posting one picture of my daughter sitting on her new bed on FB. Surprisingly , no cinderblock walls and a better room that her older sisters who went to more prestigious schools
I did post a “move-OUT” photo a couple years ago–two kids’ stuff crammed into the back of our van, with sad kid #2 (sad because she’d just graduated and was leaving her friends) and happy kid#3 (happy to come home after freshman year) standing by. No move-in photos, though. I never attended a move in (yet), and boys rooms are nothing to look at anyway. Their rooms are relatively nice–newer dorm with individual bedrooms in suites of 3–but not luxurious.(Well, the single bedrooms would’ve been quite a luxury in my day.) They do have a little microwave and mini fridge this year. But no TV, rugs, lamps, posters, curtains, extra furniture, or other decorative items. My boys take only their computers, clothes, bedding, toiletries, and a few snacks. That’s it.
Back when I was in school one freshman girl had all of her dorm furniture taken out and put in storage. She then had a nice Persian rug and four-poster bed brought in, with all the additional furnishings.
A friend of mine posted the photos of her junior daughter and freshman son on Facebook recently. They looked nicer than what I had.
