Dorm Photos

This thread is meant for dorm room photos. If you have any of your own please feel free to contribute! I’m also going to be commenting on little things I noticed when I was living there.

Gilchrist Single:

Gilchrist singles are long and skinny rooms. You get the dresser, bed, desk, chair, top desk shelves (it’s the wood shelving at the end of the bed in the 3rd picture- better for storage), mini-fridge, trash can, and under-sink storage. The staff leaves toilet paper at your door periodically. The walls are pretty good at buffering sound and the dorm closes over winter/spring breaks.

The mini fridges (in both my double and single) sucked big time. Don’t expect milk to last for more than a few days. “Does this smell right to you?” was a common occurrence when I had a roommate. The freezers work fine but have the tendency to ice over fast.

If you’re going to put up posters (especially the huge ones people buy during market wednesdays) use those velcro wall stickies. It’s the best way to save the poster for the next year. Use white colored-ones in case you need to leave a few behind. I lost the poster in the picture due to tape.

I used a double hanger in the closest and plastic drawers under the bed for additional storage. As you can see I raised my bed way up to fit extra towels on top of the plastic drawers. If you don’t like acrobatics to get into bed I’d recommend putting them on sticky wall hooks (I love wall hooks, could always use more!) if you plan on bringing lots of towels.

The windowsills in this room are great for misc items. There is also a shelf at the top of the closet. If you plan to cook I’d recommend getting plastic containers for pots/pans/plastic-wear for the top and bottom of the closet.

The light in this room is a little weak. A cheap floor lamp will go a long way. Also consider hanging a door mirror. In my double the people from the previous year had installed one directly onto the bathroom door and I kind of missed it when I switched rooms.

I took these quick snapshots after I had finished moving rooms to give my parents an idea of the new room- they weren’t meant for show so be nice ;). I’ll have some photos from my McCollum single up sometime later in the day. I have a couple from when I moved in and then again when I started packing to move out.

Good job, Yau! Well done and very organized.

An inexpensive rug helps…especially during the winter.

McCollum efficiency:

McCollum is for sophomores and above (sorry freshman!). I really loved living here. This dorm is open for winter/spring breaks. No RAs. You get a small couch, full-sized fridge, table with 2 chairs, desk, desk chair, small trash can, and a bed. My room was filthy when I moved in. I’d definitely set aside a few hours to bomb the place with cleaning supplies before you move in.

If you’ve ever ridden a McCollum elevator you’ll notice floors are skipped. The quads spread out over the singles on those ‘missing’ floors. Since the elevators don’t pull Speedy Gonzales tricks like kellum this is a Good thing. Much like Gilchrist noise isn’t really an issue unless there’s an FSU football game going on ;).

After: http://i45.■■■■■■■.com/212h6rb.jpg</a>
No after picture of the sink side but it looked generally the same. I put non-slip mats in the many cupboards they manage to cram in. The bottom doors from the oven over to the right are all one so I slipped in a large two-tiered rack for pots and pans. Another small step-rack was used for canned food in one of the top cupboards. A dish drying rack took up residence on my counter as did a toaster. I also hung hot pads. Be careful when first using the oven. Mine ran on the hot side. The fridge works fabulously and is very roomy.

Living Area-

I included another version of the first after picture again just to give an idea of how the living area meets the kitchen.
Nice balcony and huge window that lets in tons of light. McCollum tends runs warm so get a fan. Also find out who has minor control of your air and keep that info posted to your wall. I had a small dust problem in this room so I’d advise having your own vacuum.

The couch is nice. They replaced the cushions soon after I moved in. I covered my couch and desk chair with blue cotton sheets (not in the picture as they were packed after their last wash) in order to keep them cleaner. There is no dresser which means if you want your TV off the floor/desk then you’ll have to provide a stand.

I put down a carpet and used cubes to organize all my stuff. Like the Gilchrist single I would advise an inexpensive standing lamp.

Bedroom-
http://i49.■■■■■■■.com/2sb4w2v.jpg</a></p>

No after pictures! I had already started packing when I took these so the place was a mess. I placed a small nightstand with a lamp to the right of the bed and a runner carpet to the left. The closet is absolutely Massive! You get two long sliding-door closests (which each have a large running shelf) and eight drawers. Didn’t need my double hanger, that’s for sure!

Bathroom-
Before: http://i50.■■■■■■■.com/4hzkgi.jpg</a>
After: http://i45.■■■■■■■.com/125051g.jpg</a>

Off of the bedroom is the bathroom. There is a sink with no under storage, a mirror that opens, toilet, and a square-ish tub/shower. I added the white cupboard (too much of a pain to get off so left it for the next person- you’re welcome!). There are also four large towel racks that easily hold two towels each.

The way this room is built feels like it was originally intended for two people instead of one. It’s definitely very spacious. I loved it so much I’ll be living here again next year :D

No doubt I left important tidbits out but at least this is a start!

D2 can attest to the desirability of a single in McCollum. She stayed there for about two years.

I don’t understand why a single in McCollum is less than Ragans. In Ragans, you share a kitchen/living area with three others and a bathroom with one other. In McCollum, you get all of that to yourself.

Thanks parent2noles!
