Dorm question

I was reading that you can send an email requesting a particular dorm or double/triple etx. My daugter is accepted into University Honors and 2 of the choices are La Plata or Anne Arundel Hall. Anyone have experience with either of these or pros/cons about either?
thanks!

Here’s some more info on the halls

They are in different areas of campus and if you want more information on which one is more convenient, you can refer to this awesome map

Also,
"Housing Requests
To request a roommate, please send an e-mail to reslife@umd.edu with both of your full names and University ID numbers with the request to have that student as your roommate. We will need a similar request from that student to consider the requests mutual. Please keep in mind, we cannot guarantee housing requests, though we will try to honor them if possible.

You can also request building preferences. We recommend you review the “Residence Halls at a Glance” and e-mail us at least 3 preferences. You can also request an entire community and/or a specific room type (apartment, suite, double, etc.) If you have documented special needs that require specific accommodations, then contact the office for assistance.

The deadline to received best consideration on your housing requests is May 31. If you send a request after that date, we will try our best to accommodate your request. Some reasons we may not be able to accommodate your request:

Roommate request was not mutual
Applications received in April
Students in different living learning programs"

That answers all your questions i believe :)

Anne Arundel is sooooooo nice!!! La Plata is just a typical dorm, but Anne Arundel is in a great location and is much nicer!

However, the likelihood of freshmen getting into either of these dorms by request is probably not particularly high. It never hurts to try, but sophomores usually take most of the available spots. There may be some late change-of-plans of previous students who change their mind in the summer about housing, and freshmen get assigned those rooms. I just want to make sure that the expectations are realistic of how much of choice you really have… both LaPlata and Anne Arundel are especially popular and are preferred dorms. Your student will get Honors Housing, but most likely in the default, more heavily freshman dorm (Ellicott???)

Thanks so much for the information. It is helpful to know that most of the Freshman are put in the other dorms–didn’t know how realistic it was to get a “preferred choice”.

When I enrolled in University Honors 2 years ago, I was never asked for a preferred choice or given options. I was just placed into Denton (the University Honors dorm at the time. Now it’s Hagerstown.) So I don’t know if that’s a new thing they’re doing for everyone now, or just giving a few people a preferred choice? But yeah I agree with astrophysicsmom not to get your hopes up, I just don’t know if asking people their preference is a new thing because 2 years ago no one I know in Honors got asked.

There was no special invitation to request a particular room–just saw on the Housing webiste that you can email a request. I think we are just going to go with the flow and take what we get! Thanks everyone!

@ProudMom2012,

LaPlata is only for ILS and EIP. UH are housed in hagerstown. see link below.
