<p>My son was recently accepted as an Early Decision. Looking for any updated information on Residency Halls, e.g pros/cons based on social, amenities, location, etc.</p>

<p>Does your son want a learning community? If so which one? You can get into the Colonnades (singles) if you join certain ones.
Does your son want a social dorm or a quiet one?
How far is he willing to walk to class, 0, 5, 10, or 15 minutes?
Does your son want to live in a suite, or a double on a hall?
What kind of bathrooms does your son want? Hall, suite between two rooms on a hall, or multiple facilities for a suite of 8-10?
Will your son eat at all you can eat style dining or grab something to go more often?</p>

<p>Which of these is most important? The least?</p>

<p>so this is what we have come up with.

  • learning comm. not important
  • somewhere in between social and quiet. i guess, social enough, but still be able to study in the dorm… if that makes sense… they should be able to field a decent volleyball team.
  • walking isn’t a big deal… but 15 minutes?? are dorms a mile away? don’t remember hearing that on the tour…
  • suites, halls, etc… i think the situation with the most space and have the ability for some private time/space is cool.
  • in hall dining is nice, but not important.</p>

<p>frankly, he isn’t that particular, but don’t want to get in the wrong situation… maybe that doesn’t exist in these dorms… like some other schools. we were really just trying to get a general map of the campus halls… east vs west, etc. trying to avoid too much partying or distractions while still maintaining a social element.</p>

Danieley, on the right, is about a 15 minute walk to main campus, bottom, but there is a tram to the science building. The Colonnades, between Danieley and main campus, is about a 10 minute walk to main campus. North Area is about a 5 minute walk to main campus.
The quietest dorms would probably be Virginia and Sloan, which are both learning communities. Danieley has a lot of partying, but it really depends on who you get in a suite – it can also be fairly risky as campus police target it, especially the first couple of weeks. Smith is known as a party dorm and difficult to study in, as well as being dirty (all boys will do that). North area is a nice mix of partying and studying, in part because it’s easy to interact with other people on your hall (Moffitt/Staley) or are suites with thick walls that not much sound gets through (Maynard/Colclough/Chandler) and Harden is the dining hall with the most dining options on a regular basis, with Octagon nearby as well.</p>
