Dorm Room Comforter?

Help! My daughter is really overthinking the comforter for her dorm room. She has looked in stores and on-line and can’t find anything that she likes. She’s looked at Bed Bath, Kohl’s, PB Teen, Penney’s and Target. She is talking to her roommate today to see if she has found anything. They aren’t trying to coordinate, just not clash. She wants a print and of course wants everything in her room to match/coordinate with the comforter. Any suggestions on other places to look?

(I’m remembering how frustrated I was with my son when I was buying his dorm things and his standard responses were I don’t know and I don’t care - and he really didn’t. Totally different with my daughter…)

Some schools have catalogues that you can order linens from and they are directly delivered to your dorm. This is a great way to save on linens. Have you checked to see if the school has this? This could limit her choices and make it easier for her to decide.

How about online? All the places you listed will have more online selection, plus of course, there are plenty of other stores online as well. This will give her limitless possibilities (of course you may regret that…)

I personally would never order from the school catalogs. I don’t think they save you $$$ upfront and the comfort/quality may be subpar.

We have shopped at TJ Maxx for bedding for all 3 college kids. #3 just recently bought her quilt there for freshman year coming up. Bought it for under $30. She prefers a quilt over a comforter. S who graduated from college in 2010 is moving into an apartment this week and just yesterday was washing his college comforter/sheets/towels - after 4 years of use - to bring to his apartment for the guest bed. Much good use still in them!

I told my kids to make sure their choice would be one that they would be happy to use for 4 years unless it fell apart. So if you don’t think polka dots will be your think in 4 years, don’t buy it now!!!

I second the TJ Maxx or Ross suggestion. She could also try a duvet cover over a quilt or blanket for easier washability and more choices.

That’s what I’ve heard, as well, abasket.

Some other stores are Walmart, Big Lots, Ross, Marshalls, and HomeGoods.

The linen services offered through the college are awful. The qualify is terrible. The only ones we know who did this were expats who just weren’t here to do the shopping.

Target, Marshall’s, TJMaxx, any department store that carries linens (my kid got a great set at Penneys), Walmart, BBB, IKEA, and if you want spend lots…Company Store, LLBean, Pottery Barn.

No shortage of places that sell comforters.

My kids both took the comforters from their twin beds at home…and we’re happy to have them.

Another “NO” vote on the college linen services.

Your D may just be a week or two early for best selection. Stores here are only now beginning to put out the back-to-school merchandise. Size of comforter/duvet is something to think about if she is likely to move off-campus at some point in her college career and want a full/queen size bed. You can use a full/queen comforter on a twin bed (if bed is on risers, it may look better than a twin comforter).

Duvet covers would be relatively easy to sew if she finds fabric she likes. They can also be made from flat sheets.

As much as I hate Macy’s, I buy a lot of bedding there. Baby kiddo’s sheets and comforter came from there, too.

Be sure to look for Twin XL.

Check with your college on what size the beds are first, if you haven’t done so already.

Actually a regular twin comforter will be fine. My kids both used them in their dorms on xlong twin beds. Plenty of length to cover them up at night.

And check the college…because NOT all dorms have xlong twin beds anyway.

He’s using his brothers from 3 years ago when he was a freshman, but everything else I’m buying new. Yep…his response…I don’t care. So…I’m trying to find sheets that I think are soft enough that are XL twin. Found some at Kohl’s yesterday at 275 thread count, but I’m not crazy about them. Haven’t checked anyplace else yet. Also need fast drying towels. Found tons at Target, but reviews say they are crap and start shedding after a few washes. I’d love to take a day off and just get it all done.

I was curious so searched to see how much longer “XL Twin” is opposed to “Twin”. This is what I found:

Twin-XL 39’‘x 80’’ (inches) Twin-XL size (Extra-Long) is 5 inches in length longer than the standard twin. This size is great for taller youth or adults. Twin-XL is the same length as a queen or king, In fact two of them side by side equals a king.

This website has some unusual duvet covers, as well as some cute throw pillows and accessories:

We made a duvet cover with the top sheets from the sheet set. Then you can use whatever comforter you have or just the cover when it’s hot.

Ikea and Overstock, (they have a back to school tab that has comforter sets and also duvet colors, great selections).

Duvet covers for my Ds at Urban Outfitters (expensive) and for S at IKEA (cheap).

Pick one comforter and two duvet covers then decide on move in.

In retrospect I think my older d examined every possible comforter that was in every store possible at the time. Lucky for you that some of them such as Linens & Things and Fortunoff are out of business. I think she ultimately bought something from either Bed, Bath or Target… and then revisited and bought additional bedding a few years later when younger d was searching.
