Dorm roommates

When/where do you find out your assignments? At SPOP?

do you mean the roommate for the night or for the year?

for SPOP- if i remember correctly, when you check in you get this orientation pamphlet that says the schedule, and on the corner they put your name and your room placement. then later when you go to drop off your luggage, you basically have to check in again to get the keys for that building/your room

for the year- it will come through the mail after labor day-ish (you get it very close to the start of school)

Oh, I didn’t think about SPOP but that’s helpful too haha. Dang, should I bother trying to buy stuff for rooming with the friend I requested?

What do you usually need to buy for dorming for the year? Also, what kind of flooring does ME and Mesa have?

Wood iirc. I’m asian and I don’t remember taking off my shoes.

There’re a lot of good resources that have lists of what you should bring to dorms, but essentially bring bedding and linens, your computer, a lamp, and washing things. Then you can bring all that fun junk like DVDs and whatever, but don’t bring anything too expensive because you don’t want it stolen even though at UCI you can leave your really expensive calculator out in the common room for five days and it won’t even be touched.

And the flooring is rough carpet. You know, like you find at motels or whatever that have all the different colors so you won’t notice stains as much. If you look around the web, you can find pictures of the dorms.

this list was very helpful and detailed: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-life/82285-z-what-bring-college.html

i just copied/pasted it into word and deleted whatever things i knew i didn’t have to bring, and went based off of that.

i don’t think “too expensive” is really a problem because plenty of people bring stuff like their gaming systems, expensive cameras, tv’s, musical instruments, etc. you can always bring a safe and put it under your bed if you feel that paranoid. i had a suitcase that had to be locked with a key and combination, and it was attached to my bed post. if you always lock your door and you’re not on the 1st floor, i wouldn’t worry too much about theft. niklj has a point too; generally people aren’t interested in taking stuff they find in the common rooms. food/consumables are a different story, however… someone took my starbucks twice from the downstairs kitchen, even when it was labeled, and a friend of mine had her kitchenware stolen.

depending on how well you and your roommate get along, you might not feel comfortable with sharing a lot of stuff. my roommie and i basically just shared the microfridge that we both paid half to rent, and that was about it. for some things that you might not need two of and might not use much anyway, like an iron or TV, you might want to think about ahead, but most of the stuff isn’t what you would automatically want to share

as far as bedding, you probably don’t want to take whatever you use at home (if you’re socal) because then you won’t have anything to use when you go home on weekends or whenever… but you need bedsheets for twin xl, and try not to buy many sets because i don’t think soph year housing has the same bed size so then you’ll probably never use the twin xl sheets again.

here’s another good list i found recently: [acatnamedollie: College List Okay. Here is my Master Lis](What to Bring to College and College Advice: acatnamedollie — LiveJournal)
