dorm singles for first-years?

Totally random question…are there any singles available to first-years at Carleton? I can’t find this info anywhere on the website.

Thanks!

No - freshman are assigned to doubles or triples. My daughter was in a triple and loved it. Depending on room draw, you can get a single as a sophomore. Carleton is also building a new dorm (singles and doubles) that should open in fall, 2009.

Darn…how are the triples set up, is it like two and one, or all three kids sharing a big room?

Thanks for the quick reply

It depends on the building (freshmen are assigned to almost every dorm). You can find the dorm floor plans on the Carleton website. The “least desirable” triples are in Watson, which are converted corner doubles. They are actually larger than regular doubles, but smaller than regular triples. My daughter was in one, and it was fine, spacewise. She and her roommates bunked two of the beds. I believe the plan is to change these back to doubles when the new dorm is built. New freshmen have the opportunity to state a preference for doubles or triples on the roommate survey form. Carleton also does a great job pairing roommates.

Both. Here’s a link to check out floor plans for the dorms (halls) and houses. Each room setup is marked with the number of occupants.
edit: cross-posted with fireflyscout re: floor plans

Last week’s Carletonian spelled out the final plans for the two new dorms and they look fantastic.

They’ll be built adjacent to one another on First Street across from the Language and Dining Center, essentially forming a new quad with Nourse and Myers (at right angles). They’ll be built in early 1900’s Nourse/Evans style with state of the art green-friendly construction (solar panels, solar water heating, etc.).

One will be standard singles and doubles. One will contain “independent living” suites, quads and quints.

Existing Watson triples will be converted to large doubles.

Construction is to start in about 2-3 months targeting occupancy Fall 2009.

justacluelesskid: Sorry, singles freshman year will still be few and far between (you sure you want a single as a freshman???). But the new construction along with the townhouses, etc. should make for great housing options next year.

Yeah, the new dorms do look great. But slight correction to “singles for freshman will be few and far between.” Actually, singles for freshmen will be continue to be completely unavailable (barring like, handicapped accessible reasons or something). This policy is not related to number of singles available on campus, it’s related to Carleton’s focus on community experience. Thus everyone has a roommate for at least one year.

It’s definitely better not to have a single as a freshman. It’s generally not difficult to get a Watson single as a sophomore if you want one. The new dorms will probably make it even easier.

I’m glad they’re turning those Watson triples back into doubles. They also seem to be closing off Faculty Club (maybe because it’s haunted) and the stadium apartments. It was also interesting to read that the townhouses weren’t supposed to be there for more than a decade or two (they’ve got to be at least eight years old now). I don’t know what they’re planning to do with that space.

I apologize for reviving an ancient post, but just read Americanski’s post about the Faculty Club being haunted. Not that I believe such things, but I had never heard that rumor. Do tell.

I’ve heard a few things, but can’t remember what the story is. For fun, check this:

Haha, I lived in Faculty Club for a year and they are they are not kidding about the hallways being confusing. I don’t know about the ghost, but there was a bat in the dorm for about 3 weeks.

Oh no! They’re closing down 2 of the 4 places I lived at Carleton?!

Fac Club was originally 3 buildings that sort of grew over top of each other, making it incredibly easy to get lost inside. And I could totally see it being haunted. But the Stadium apartments were beautiful, with lofts and vaulted ceilings (aka the underside of the bleachers) and two-story windows overlooking the Cannon.

Of course, now I go to grad school in Texas, and when I tell people I lived under the football stadium, they look at me like I’m a crazy person.

Faculty Club is open for at least 2009-10. Stadium is no longer available for student housing. If you’re looking for good ghosty times, try sleeping in the middle school?
