Dorm

Do plebes get to choose their dorm mates?

Negative. You only get that right (and it’s not absolute) as an upperclassman.

Z thngs have changed at least for some companies.

No choice during Plebe summer but mine picked his two roommates for the academic year. They picked about a week before PPW so we were abe to meet the roommates to be and parents.

Not only did son choose his roommates, which he has had since Plebe summer, I think they had some choice of rooms.
It’s a kinder, gentler place all around.
Did you see the story of how the marines are asking Drill Sargeants to minimize their yelling?
Next thing you know there will be a tatoo parlor on the Academy grounds!

The plebes in my son’s company were allowed to choose their roommates after plebe summer, but the Firstie’s scrambled them after Christmas…new roommates, new rooms.

Geez. Why even bother wearing uniforms anymore?

What are we, Air Force?

Z, I actually recall having some choice in roommates after plebe summer – and some choice of rooms. And I’m older than you. However, it was not uncommon for the company officer and/or mids in charge to require rooming changes at various points. Looking back, there was usually good reason for it. Also, in choosing rooms, plebes “chose” last – so only the undesirable rooms remained. I believe we drew lots to see who chose first. People were able to change roommates every semester (some did, some didn’t).

At least that’s how our company worked and I don’t recall hearing different stories from other companies. The one thing I would say from reading the posts of current and very recent mids is that there is more company autonomy today than there was in my day, at least. I don’t recall any significant differences in policies from one company to another whereas now it appears that your lot in life depends a lot on the company you keep, so to speak.

If that’s the case, I think I prefer the “old” way. That said, the “new” way is probably more reflective of life in the “real Navy,” in that each ship or squadron tends to take on the personality of the CO and other leadership and thus there can be huge differences in life depending on where you end up.

Well… In my day (or at least in my company) Plebes chose their rooms and roomates as follows:

“PLEBE HO! FALL IN!”

<usual cacophany=“” of=“” chopping=“” plebes=“” falling=“” in.=“”></usual>

“Over here on the bulkhead are your room assignments. You have until 1100 to have your gear moved and stowed. Understood?”

“SIR, YES SIR!”

“FALL OUT!”

<usual cacophany=“” of=“” plebes=“” falling=“” out.=“”></usual>

And that was it.

Before Christmas, one of my two roomates quit. He was replaced without comment by another guy. Just showed up one morning saying, “I’ve been ordered to move here.” That was it.

“Choice” didn’t rear its head until I got back from Youngster Cruise. I don’t recall it being different in the other companies, but there were 35 of them, so I suppose anything could happen.

Z-“What is this the Air Force?” As a blue brother who taught at the DOD Fire Academy I remember when they told us our students could call “Time outs” if instructors got “enthusiastic”. I was a superintendent and would always couple an AF instructor with a Marine Instructor. The Marine could not only get enthusiastic, but use push-up’s as an incentive. Push-up’s were very effective.

My experience at the academy was the same as USNA1985’s. Plebes were able to choose roomates after plebe summer. We were also able to choose rooms but they were the least desirable ones that were left after the upper class had already made their selections. My last two years I had really good rooms right on the corner of T-court and next to the Brigade staff.
