I am transferring to Columbia next year and want to know what the social atmosphere of the dorms are like. I visited campus and from what I can tell, I’d like to live in either Shapiro, the LLC, or Broadway. Do the upperclassmen socialize in these dorms or do they keep to themselves? As a transfer upperclassmen, I’d like to meet as many new people as possible.
What kind of environment can I expect from each dorm? Thanks guys!!

broadway, people keep to themselves. the LLC is nice, don’t know much about shapiro, but I think it’s pretty social. if you can, I would say try to live in EC (East Campus)-I think I know some transfers who live there.

If you’ll be a sophomore, consider McBain. The amenities are poor, but it’s pretty spacious, and since most sophomores live there, it’s also a social hub.

Broadway is nice for juniors who already have their set social groups and want to return home to their single after the party, rather than host it. EC is very social, but in a different sense. There are parties there every weekend, but not much mingling outside your suite/townhouse, since the expectation is that people from other dorms come to you.

I believe there are spaces in brownstones reserved for transfers as well. Those have pretty nice amenities.

Regardless of where you live, however, the fact that you’re in a smallish group of transfers and get your own orientation program often means that you can form friendships. Meeting non-transfer students is somewhat harder, but still doable through Core classes, clubs, and such.
