Dorms!

So I got an e-mail telling me I’m living in Goddard this year (yay first choice!). So now I’m starting to do some dorm shopping a little. Discuss here  Where are you living/hope to live?

Should I go with buying the recommended sheets that they sent in the mail or should I just go to Target, etc. to buy mine? Since NYU doesn’t have much of a school pride feel, would it be embarrassingly tacky to pin up my NYU pennant on my wall? I heard Goddard isn’t much of a party dorm, is that true? I do want to sleep on weeknights, don’t get me wrong, but I do want to have some fun, it’s college after all.

You got dorm results already? I thought they came in in July!

from the e-mail:

I assume if you didn’t apply for Residential college you’ll hear back in July. I don’t have my room or roommates or whatever yet, just that I get to live in Goddard lol.

See, I know the smart thing is to go minimal and only pack the essentials. But I’m going to be a thousand miles away from my home and I know I’m going to be homesick so it’s hard for me not to pack the useless comfort items and knick-knacks. I don’t want to end up a hoarder though. My parents keep telling me not to bring my favorite glass dolphin ornament or snowglobe because they’re accidents waiting to happen but how can I not? lol sentimentality.

Now I’m getting super nervous over my roommate. I went with random and am now wishing I found someone online instead.

dreamer2012, congrats on your dorm placement. Don’t listen to luthersetzer. Yes it is possible you will not like your roommate, but it is also possible you will get along just fine or even become great friends. He acts like you are going to jail! NYU is a top 10 dream school for heavens sake.

You want to make your room comfortable and happy, especially if you are a long way from home.
You can buy twin extra long sheets at Target or many other places. Bring things that are colorful and make you happy. And yes you can hang an NYU pendant. My kid is incredibly proud of getting in there! The kids we know who already go there love it! I don’t know why you think there isn’t school pride.

I agree with your Mom, you shouldn’t bring anything glass, that is irreplaceable.

dreamer, Thanks for posting about your housing e-mail. My S also applied to Goddard but didn’t hear anything. ugh–now he has to wonder about this.

I agree with Mommy5–think positive and make the room the way you want. My D’s dorm room (at a different school) was the size of a cell but she made it really “her” (lots of hot pink with a purple unicorn pillow, for starters ).

Best wishes to you!!

Better pack your ninja outfit, dreamer!

Luther, There are many definitions of success through many different paths. Dreamer says she wants to have a little FUN and room-decorating counts, in my book.

Hey, got into Goddard too! I’m also confused about what to bring and since I live all the way in AFRICA!!! I think packing light would be a good idea…but I still gotta bring something…hmmm confused…lol  Psyched though about GODDARD!!!

@ Dreamer2012 and Anita95: Congratulations on getting into the Goddard residential community! My daughter loved her year in Goddard and made wonderful friends there, many of whom are still friends today, five years later. Living in Goddard creates an instant sense of community and its premium location makes it really easy to become involved in NYU campus life. Still, you have to put yourself out there, especially in the first few weeks when everyone is finding their core social group.

I would recommend not buying the sheets offered through NYU as they tend to be low quality for the price. I’m not sure if this is still the case, but when my daughter started at NYU there was a shuttle bus looping continuously from the freshman dorms to the Bed, Bath and Beyond store in Chelsea for the first few days after check-in. Target, TJ Maxx and Marshalls also tend to have a good selection of XL twin sheets and other dorm necessities beginning in late June through early September. One thing that we got my daughter that she came to really appreciate was a plush mattress topper. The “mattresses” in the dorms are slabs of high density foam covered in a thick vinyl, and while that is a good thing from a sanitation standpoint (impervious to stains and infestation) it makes for a less than ideal sleeping experience. I highly recommend buying some kind of down or synthetic filled mattress topper held in place by an XL mattress cover. Your back will thank you.
