The time for making housing deposits and dorm choices is getting closer. Any advice from current UW students?

D will probably be applying for a spot in the honors community dorms--which means McCarty or Landers. Comments? Advantages/disadvantages?

S was on the Honors floor in Lander his first year. He had a wonderful time, made a lot of friends. Lander is a standard dorm, the rooms were rather small but clean and the furniture was new. It's an all-freshman dorm so "everybody is in the same boat" . S didn't like dining facilities in Lander, he used McMahon facilities more often, especially for lunch between classes. I don't know much about McCarty, I think the rooms are a little bigger there. S is in McMahon this year in a cluster with a bunch of friends from last year honors floor. They already rented a large house for next year.

Great to know! Thanks!

I lived on the Honors floor in Lander last year, and it was a great experience meeting friends who, like parabella said, were "in the same boat." It was nice having some neighbors as classmates too. The room was pretty nice, a bit small, but comfortable. I lived on the water side so the view was really nice, but the sun shining in made the room really warm and stuffy. The food in Lander isn't all that great, but the attempt at variety sure is appreciated.

I live in McCarty Honors this year, and it's a lot quieter. In Lander, everyone gets to know each other and really want to make friends. In McCarty where you have more upperclassmen, people have mostly already found their group of friends so they don't really go out of their way to meet new people. One disadvantage for me is that I got put on the floor with the women's bathroom so I have to head up or down to use the men's bathroom. The Honors floor covers both the first and second floor of south tower so I just got a bit unlucky on that part. The rooms in McCarty are quite a bit larger which is nice.

I would say as a freshman living in Lander is the way to go if you're looking to really meet people and connect with fellow honors freshmen. But McCarty is a great choice as well. I feel more on campus living in McCarty versus living in Lander, but either way works well. I wrote some comments on UW Housing on a previous thread too if you're interested: ;/a>

Hi. Do you have any suggestions for "local" freshman wanting to live in the dorms and not wanting to rush for the Greek system? We want our daughter to get the college life experience even though we live 15 minutes away??? What dorms would you recommend if she is not in the honors program?

last week i visited all the dorms with a uw friend. she lives in lander and i went into her room in which i suddenly felt hard to breathe, because her room is really small and the hall is narrow, however she likes it because she mostly studies in the library and other places that she uses her dorm to get rest basically.

too bad i didn't go into stevens court which i'll apply as my first choice(single room is my priority). but from the outside i already loved it! i appreciated it's quiet and clean enviroment.

According to that chart, it says Yes under Engineering for Mercer only.. does that mean if I plan on going to Computer Engineering, I have to go to Mercer?

Also, can anyone recommend a hall for me?
-I don't mind living with someone. I'm a pretty social person, so I usually can get used to people.
-I'd prefer a bigger room, but hell I can work with a smaller room.
-I want to meet new people especially since I'm out of state and will have no more than 1-2 high school people that I know coming to UW with me.
-I'm going to be big on sports and I plan on going to all the games.
-I plan on partying, a lot.
-I eat anything, and everything. I rarely find food disgusting or terrible. If its decent, I'll eat it, and I'll love it. (I'm not fat, I swear)
-The extra walls could be nice because I do like to play music and stuff...

If anyone can help, that would be great. I was thinking Lander at first, but I really don't know anything about the dorms.
