I’m class of 2014 and am a bass player… I was wondering if there’s any place to store large instruments in Dodge? It would be a pain (/not a reality…) to store such a large instrument in a small dorm room. Are there lockers or something that we can rent out to store large instruments?

Thanks!

Nope, I’m 99% sure that there isn’t any storage space in dodge or anywhere else on campus for instruments. Welcome to Columbia and NYC, where there will never be enough space. I have a friend who plays bass and he keeps it in his dorm room, and he’s fine with that.

If you plan on continuing to play in college, I would recommend taking the fact that you’ll have to store your bass in your room into consideration when you choose housing. It is definitely possible to store a bass in the Carman doubles (although not especially comfortably). It would be a VERY difficult in the John Jay singles, and I’m not sure about the Furnald rooms (never had a reason to go in there…). LLC might actually be easiest in your case beacuse you could leave you bass in the common room (not sure I’d recommend LLC to anyone…some people like it though). Your call

ha i’m also a double bass player but i’m heading to penn.

OP - it depends - if you are part of the university orchestra they will give you storage space, to be part of it you have to audition when you are a student.

i believe the storage space is in lerner, but i may be mistaken (the university orchestra practices in lerner). so that is the surest way to get storage, but it only is for folks part of the orchestra (and it may include folks in jazz band or in some capacity part of the music performance program).

there are multiple proposals when i last left to open more storage space, which tentatively may happen after this summer when space that used to be part of satellite offices for the center for student advising disappear and will be used for students.

so stay tuned.

but a lot of students i found preferred having their base with them, whether to practice or take to a gig, then to have it locked up somewhere.
