Double count some courses?

I was recently admitted to IU (Kelley DA) and one of the factors that will decide whether I will be attending IU is how manageable it will be for me to complete a dual degree (BSB + BS in Comp Sci from CAS).

Will I be able to count a class such as “C308 Roman Law” to satisfy both an intensive writing requirement as well as the A&H requirement?

Also, I heard from a current IU student that a score of a 4 or above on the AP English Literature exam exempts one from the intensive writing requirement? I couldn’t find any info on the IU website to back this up, so can anyone confirm this?

I can say with complete confidence that a double major in Business with the BS in Computer Science will be about the most difficult combination do in 4 years at this campus. I was originally considering this but decided to pursue only a minor in Computer Science for several reasons. My main observation that supported this decision was the fact that I’d have to double up on gen-ed courses and major prereqs (for CS) due to little or no overlap between the math/english courses required for Kelley. Strategically this would mean I’d have to stay another year at IU (even when taking courses in the summer, thereby disrupting my chance for an internship) and take a much heavier load each semester. For me this wasn’t exactly feasible but I think it may be a more realistic option for you - especially since you’re already a direct admit and you don’t have to worry about being admitted to Kelley freshman year. Be advised, however, that you’ll probably have to average at least 18 credit hours a semester while also taking summer classes to accomplish the double major in 4 years; the average student takes 14-15 credits in the regular semesters and doesn’t stay for summer sessions, to give you a benchmark for your future academic achievement.

To answer your question about C308, if the course meets both requirements, then it WILL count as both. I confirmed this via telephone with the CS department when asking about BIO-L104, which would count as both a topics course and a natural sciences course (of course this was when I was still speculating about taking CS as a second major).

As for the AP Lit score, I have no clue.

“Students may test out of all but 3 credit hours (Intensive Writing) of the fundamental skills requirement.”

So, no, you can’t test out of the intensive writing requirement.

You can get two hours of credit for W143 with a four or five on the AP English Composition (not English Literature) AND a 32 or above on the ACT English Composition AND a score of 660 or higher on the SAT writing section.

You can also get the W143 credit with a 670 or above on the SAT critical reading section AND a score of 660 or higher on the SAT writing section.

You have to notify the English department of the scores in order to get the credit.

I have a 32 on the ACT English, so while I can’t earn credit for it, I am exempt from the English Comp requirement, correct?

I should be coming in with 34 credits from my AP Exams. Does Indiana have a limit on the number of credits I can have enroll with? I credits to place me out of the following:

E201, E202, GEOG110 - meets the S&H requirement for CAS + also the Macro + Micro requirements for Kelley
MATH211, MATH212, STATS300 - These meet the Calc 1 + Calc 2 requirements for CAS so I only need one more math class for CAS right? Also, I read on the IUB - Bulletin that I can use my STATS300 credits to earn credit for E370 so I can meet that requirement for Kelley right?
PHYS211, PHYS212 - 10 credits that can be used to meet the Nat Sciences requirement

Unfortunately, it looks like my AP US Gov, Eng Lit, and Env Sci credits are sorta useless, but oh well.

Wavarian, if you have some free time, will you be willing to look over a schedule I made for my 4 years at Indiana?

Sure, I’d be happy to look at your schedule. If you do, in fact, come in with 34 credits then the double major should be the realm of possibility.

See my private message for further details.

The GEOG G110 and POLS Y103, along with all your physics (did you mean physics P201 and P202 rather than P211 and P212?) and math classes, and your AP English Lit score (gets you credit for the A&H class ENG L198) means that you will need only one A&H class to meet the 27 credit hour core requirement for Kelley. COAS B.S. requirement of three semesters of a foreign language will be needed; Kelley requires four semesters of a foreign language, or two approved S&H courses (which is much easier) for their international dimension requirement.

All of the above credits (including any foreign language credits from placement or taking classes) will apply to the COAS requirement that you take at least 100 credit hours in COAS in order to get a bachelor’s degree. There is a good chance that your remaining AP credit can also be applied to the 100 credit requirement. So there is a good chance that you could double major in four years without a whole bunch of summer classes. It might depend on your Kelley major concentration, as a major like management requires probably twelve to fifteen hours fewer business courses than accounting or finance, and all the hours you take in COAS to meet your 100 credit requirement and the required business courses will easily put you over the 124 required to graduate from Kelley.

[Advanced Placement (AP)](http://ud.iub.edu/fs_ap.php)

I am not sure about how the courses will overlap, but in general Indiana makes it easy to double major. I just spent about 13 hours last week looking at requirements for majors and minors and I have come up with my schedule for the next 3 and a half years. I can triple major in Finance, Economic Counsulting, and Accounting and can minor in Economics. I won’t have to take more than 5 classes at a time and 15cr hrs. a semester (senior year only 4 classes/12cr hrs.), as long as I spend two summers taking classes at my local community college. So it is probably doable, the question is how difficult will the courses be and can you schedule them so you can spread out the difficult classes over multiple semesters (second semester junior year I will have to take 5 classes all at the 300/400 level). The theme is if you spend the time looking into class requirements, you can do it.

After thinking it over, I decided to just do a triple major consisiting of Finance, IPM, and either econ consulting or acct. All the requirements for A&S make the degree not worth it for me.

So am I right to assume that you can earn credit for both an A&H, N&M, or S&H class as well as fulfill the international requirement with the same class?

Absolutely. And if you take an additional 2 econ classes outside the econ classes required to graduate you earn an econ minor.
