I want to study early childhood education at rowan. It’s the best teaching school in NJ and it’s close enough to where I won’t have to live on campus. They require a double major when a part of the education field, and I’d like to study french, but rowan only has it as a minor. None of the other disciplines truly interest me as french does, as language opens up the world.
1.) can I take the minor in hopes of later turning it into a major at another college?
2.) could I do a dual degree type thing, taking education at rowan and french at, say, stockton? Would rowan approve of this?
3.) is my only option if I go to rowan that I have to do education, a major that doesn’t necessarily interest, and if I want any french education is have to minor in it?
Thanks! If it makes any difference, my french teacher said rowan used to have the french major.
Why not do it all at Stockton? Very good teaching school, too. Check it out. Lots of exciting things happening there.

Well, yes, but are you planning to transfer? It sounds like you are planning to stay at Rowan for the four years and get your education degree there. You couldn’t complete a major somewhere else after you finished your BA at Rowan. If you’re planning to get your BA from Rowan, then you need to plan for the degrees that Rowan has.

You could probably take classes at Stockton as a visiting/transient student, or cross-register for classes. Rowan probably has guidelines about this on their website, so I would check it out and/or ask an academic advisor to be sure.
But unless you live in-between Rowan and Stockton, Rutgers-Camden is closer to Rowan and easier to cross-register with geographically than Stockton. Not sure about the actual mechanics, though - you’d need to ask an academic advisor.
- Well, first of all, why would you major in education if you’re not interested in it?
Second of all, it appears that that’s the best formal option they have. There is no French major and there probably aren’t enough classes to make a French major (otherwise they would offer it). You could probably cross-register for some French classes at Richard Stockton.
If you live close enough to commute to Rowan, you probably also live close enough to commute to Rutgers-Camden. Rutgers does have a French major, but they also have early childhood education certification. They are rather unique in that they don’t have an education major, only certificates that make you eligible for licensure. It’s not 100% clear, but it appears that you can major in French and still get the generalist P-3 or K-6 certificate, allowing you to teach traditional elementary school classes. You can also get the P-12 certification in French only, but that will only allow you to teach French in schools, which realistically you will only be able to do for middle and high school. You can also do a dual program in which you complete K-6 certification and also complete middle grades (5-8) certification, so you are prepared to teach any elementary school grade but ALSO can teach French to middle school students.
