double major eng at state then go to gradeschool at MIT.

Hey guys, I have a question. I am currently a community college student, and due to some financial difficulties, I might have to go to end up transferring to either SF state, or san jose state. I will get in for sure (my GPA is 3.7, and all my igetc and prereq classes are done), and I will be getting in for electrical engineering, and I plan to double major in aerospace engineering. Assuming I did well and gained some internship experience, do you think its possible for me to go to a good graduate school ?

Bottom line question: Will doing very well at a state school, give me a chance of getting into good grade schools like MIT, U Chicago, U Michigan, or U Illinois ?

Thank you, very much.

One word: research, research, research!
(More words: good research recs, personal statement.)

If you have strong research, you can definitely get in.

Teach me your ways master ! haha. Do internships matter or only research? and do you know of any institutions that will offer research opportunities other than the school that one is currently attending ?

Internships are great, but only at academic institutions. I’ve had professors on grad committees here at MIT straight up tell me they don’t highly regard industry rec letters since nobody knows the CEO of XYZ company; they do recognize the names of their field’s colleagues though.

Check out the NSF-funded REUs. They’re summer internships and I know of many people who have gotten a publication out of one from a generous PI. If nothing else, you will at least come out with a letter of rec if you work hard.

Agreed. I’ve heard like thousand times that academic research and LOR from PIs are everything…

Thank you very much, I really don’t want my money situation to hold me back so what I’ll do is go to state for now ace my way through get some research done through the school or NSF then see see how things go.

Thank you once again.
