Double Major: Engineering/East Asian studies

So I was accepted as undeclared in the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. I’m wondering if it would be hard to get into an engineering major in Viterbi while also majoring in East Asian studies within the College of L, A and S.

Thanks! :)

My understanding is an acceptance to CLAS is not a guarantee for acceptance to Viterbi.
However, perhaps you could major in East Asian studies and do a minor at Viterbi for non-engineering students. Call USC admissions to see if you can do a double major with Viterbi. I think you have to apply to Viterbi.

There is some sort of a process you have to go through in order to get into Viterbi (taking certain classes etc.) but I’m not sure how hard it is to get in.

The only minors that Viterbi offers in Engineering are Petroleum and Environmental (and also Computer Science) but I believe you have to be majoring in an applied science or engineering field to qualify.

As far as double majoring, I’m not sure but I think if you’re pursuing a BA you have to double major with a BA, or a BS with a BS etc. Since Engineering has all BS’s the two majors you proposed might not be possible…not to mention how hard it is to graduate on time with an engineering major without even adding a minor.

But, I am not an expert so I would still talk to someone from the university about it.

USC’s policy on double majors:

Viterbi Undergraduate Bulletin (outline of classes you have to take each year to complete your major on time):

the BA vs BS distinction doesn’t matter when one is in engineering, its viewed as two degrees anyway.

the #1 rule for double majoring is to decide what major you’d rather be if you only got to choose one of them. You should change into that major soon (before or at orientation if possible) so you can get into the courses. Then figure out how to fit the second major around the first.

if you want to change into viterbi, you should contact viterbi admissions to get more info as it is not automatic guaranteed.

I wasn’t able to visit campus recently, but I went to one of the accepted student receptions and spoke to someone from Viterbi. She said that I wouldn’t have to transfer schools or reapply, and that I could just talk to someone during orientation to get into those engineering classes. Already emailed them just to make sure, and I’m glad I asked here to get details.

I think it is possible to do a double major with Viterbi; at the reception they gave examples of Renaissance Scholars double majoring in Chemical Engineering and Creative Writing [or something along those lines].

Thanks for all of the replies! :D

Oh, one more thought: if I can’t get into Viterbi, I can still stay in CLAS, correct? Just wanted to make sure…^^

CLAS is always available for majoring in.

I know someone who doubled in computer science and east asian languages, so it’s definitely possible. It just requires some careful planning and selection of classes, to fit it all in (AP credit definitely helps a lot too!)

Keep in mind that the CS major has a foreign language requirement, unlike some of the other Engineering majors. Depending upon your major within Engineering, Viterbi has programs in China, Singapore, etc. You would need to be accepted to Viterbi and then work with an advisor to design a 4 year program to meet all requirements.

Forgot to mention that the programs in China, Singapore, etc. are part of study abroad for Viterbi students with certain Engineering majors.

All the majors do not have to be in CLAS.

Last year USC valedictorian was an engineering major and a theater major.

And Salutarian

Keep in mind that both of these students are fifth-year seniors, and I know for a fact that ChemE is very difficult to complete in four years by itself.

So while it is possible, keep in mind that with Engineering it would be very difficult to finish a double major in four years.

and that one of them is, you know, a rhodes scholar :)
