I really want to go into marketing, but from what ive heard the major is close to useless…would it be smart to double major with info systems? Are there decent job prospects with this combo?

Very much so. I teach in IS but also teach an elective for marketing majors.

Many marketing decisions are commonly based upon analyzing data …data stored in a database. IS courses will teach you how to design a database, retrieve data from a database, analyze the data (look for an IS program that has courses in ‘Big Data’), and design/build systems that generate/analyze/store marketing and sales data.

Many web based marketing jobs(search engine, online ads, paid search, email, etc) prefer people with IS, CS, or a stats/math background.

You wouldn’t really need a double major, you could major in IS and do your summer jobs/internships in the marketing field and you should be fine.

IS is a very flexible major. You can look for jobs in marketing, data analytics, IT audit, systems analysis, web design, programming, database admin, networking, etc…all dependent on the experiences you get and elective courses you take.

Another alternative is marketing research major. More technical and better jobs/pay.
