So I have decided to apply as a sophomore transfer from UCB, and wanted to pursue simultaneous degrees in math and business. I understand that if I come in, I will be able to create my own degree program, but what should I select initially on my application? The admissions officer said I should just list both under “additional information,” but the college I apply to will affect the essay I need to write.

I would check-in with the administrators, but you can always apply for dual-degree status (if you have the right requirements) at the end of sophomore year. Just apply for whichever one is more tailored to your interests and skills first.

You should be aware of this:

[Internal Transfer: Policies](http://www.college.upenn.edu/policies/transfer_internal.php)

This also may prohibit the pursuit of dual degrees as an external transfer, since the process for adding a second degree/school is similar to an internal transfer. You should clarify this with the Admissions Office, or perhaps direct an inquiry to one of the advisors mentioned/linked on this page:

[Dual Degree](http://www.college.upenn.edu/degree/dual.php)

I had contacted the admissions office earlier, and the representative seemed to make it seem really simple. I will call again to ask them and reference the external transfer policy to see if it counts…

Thanks!

I have heard it is harder to get into Wharton, so I feel like I should put that down so I will get in if accepted…but at the same time, that makes it less likely (?) for me to get in as a whole, and I would really like to do math if business doesn’t work out since in all honesty, I am better at math. (so basically interest vs. skill)

^ Also keep in mind that you could always take Wharton courses as a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, even if you weren’t able to pursue a Wharton degree. You could also pursue an interschool minor with Wharton, such as Actuarial Mathematics (great for a Math major), Consumer Psychology, Health Care Management, etc.:

yeah, it seems like I will not be able to pursue a dual degree as a transfer
I found the list of interschool minors sponsored by Wharton, but are we allowed to choose from any other minor in any other college? Like if I choose to apply to Wharton, can I do a straight math minor?

Would business be best if I’m interested in investment banking?

I’m pretty sure there are no restrictions to minors.

With banking, it’s GPA > Major > Everything else. Obviously, business won’t hurt you, but there are plenty of art history, physics, and math majors going into iBanking.
