I was wondering if I was able to Major in Architecture and Elementary Education. I have always wanted to be a Architect, but I wanted to have a back up plan, if I was not expected into School of Architecture. I have decided that an Elementary Education Major would be my back up Major. I was wondering if I was accepted to the School of Architecture could I still major Elementary Education.

Are you looking at a specific college’s architecture and education departments? It really depends on the requirements of each degree.

The accredited undergraduate architecture degree is the 5.0 year Bachelor of Architecture or B.Arch. This is a professional degree, with which you can become a licensed architect. The B.Arch is intensely focused on architecture and wouldn’t allow for double majoring in education or anything else.

Many colleges offer a 4.0 year Bachelor of arts or science IN architecture or architectural studies, or the BA/BS Architecture. These degrees are different from the B.Arch. With the BA/BS you would need to get a Masters of Architecture or M.Arch in order to become a licensed architect. The M.Arch can take from 2.0 to 3.5 eyars depending on your undergraduate degree.

But also with the BA/BS you may have more flexibility to double major. You’d have to look at the specific course requirements.

Another idea would be to get your undergraduate degree in education, then go on to graduate school to get an M.Arch. This route takes longer, and costs more, but is good if you’re not entirely committed to architecture.
