Double Major

Bio Premed + Finance … Is it doable? Lot of work? (U Miami) Advice??

Probably not worth it - You can get an MBA after the Bio option if you want or even after Med School (some offer it concurrently)

Doable, probably. Hard work, probably. Why Bio? Why Finance?

I want bio to prepare for med school rather than just taking the prereqs… Finance because i enjoy it and its never bad to have a second option right? I know its hard work but will it be too much?

Whether or not it’s too much depends on A LOT of different factors (you as a student, any other commitments, your school, the demands of the programs, etc), and no one here will be able to predict if it will be too much for you.

Make a four year plan (or however many years you want to graduate in) that includes all of the requirements for both majors (don’t forget to include graduation requirements), and get an idea of what would be required of you. Run it by your advisor if you want to make sure you’ve included all of the requirements and to get any advice that they have. Then try it. Start by taking the pre-reqs for both majors and see if it’s something you can handle. If you find that it’s too much or not worth it, pick one major to stick with. Make sure you are aware of all deadlines so you could drop a class if you find that it’s too much or that you won’t need the class anymore and don’t want to devote time to it.

Plan Bs are always good for any premed.

After numbers (GPAs, MCAT), other parts of a med school app will be very, very important to med schools. Since medicine typically involves working with patients, your motivation for pursuing a career like medicine and qualities like empathy, altruism, integrity, team player, communication skills, etc as evidenced by other parts (eg ECs, PS) will take on increasing importance to med schools. Volunteering in clinical settings with sick, disabled patients such as health clinics, hospitals, hospice, etc would be just a few of many examples. Your potential major selections, or for that matter any one major, will not really show your motivation or help you demonstrate the qualities med schools are looking for. So besides the academic demands of a double major, somehow you’ll have to find time, energy to convince med schools that you’re not just a smart guy, but you have what med schools think it takes. And since there’s only 24 hours in a day, something may suffer (GPAs, ECs) which could make you look less competitive. So talk to advisor. Good luck.

Definitely do it. So long as you can get the numbers, some finance related EC’s might be extremely helpful in separating yourself from the pack.

Thank you all guys for taking time to help me out, I will be meeting my advisor to do a sample plan and see if its something I can manage…
