I’m a transfer student majoring in CE and I just learned that if I wanted to double major in EE, all I would have to take is Electromagnetics I and Signals & Systems I. Because I am a transfer student, I am actually ahead by 1 class which means I have an open slot in my Spring quarter to take any class I want. Basically, I can take EM or S&S during the Spring quarter and the other one in the summer while still being able to get out on time in 2 years. Before the flaming starts (lol), I have already searched the forum and found similar threads but they mostly point to the consequence of spending extra years. In terms of what I want to do: I definitely want to be working with computer hardware in the future but I keep reading that an EE major is more recognized nationally. I wouldn’t mind the extra course load because after all, it’s only 2 class difference. What do you guys think? Would I be wasting my time? Thanks

I only see two (relatively small) problems with this double major:

1) The two classes you cited are often considered two of the toughest courses in EE. My Signals and Systems class at PSU had something like a 33% drop-out or fail rate!

2) This EE degree will not likely be much help - you will be considered an EE highly specialized towards computers, and will not likely see many job opportunities that you would not have with the CE degree.

Still, the cost is low, so as long as you are ready to rock those two courses you should be fine!

Both of the courses you mention are heavy in math; you may find them enjoyable and not that hard if you like math and are good at it (more so than a typical EE major). But if your math is average (for an EE major), then you may find them to be more difficult.

For the electromagnetics course, consider whether you enjoyed electricity and magnetism in freshman or sophomore physics and whether you want to learn more of that at a more advanced level.
