Is it recommended that one would do a masters in liberal arts and med school simultaneously?
I don’t understand the question.
Are you trying to ask whether you should get an MA/MD or just an MD? Because really, that’s dependent upon your interests, career goals, and finances. I would say that probably about 90% of the time an MD student does not need whatever joint degree they are planning to get. If you want to work as a doctor…you don’t need an MA in English or political science or whatnot. There are some programs that can maybe enhance your career goals a bit - like an MD/MPA for someone interested in working as a physician and then getting into public healthcare administration/policy now or later, or an MD/MPH for someone interested in working in public health institutions as a clinician or otherwise. But what would you need an MA in comparative literature or sociology for? I mean, maybe you just want one, and if you want to shell out the money and spend the extra year getting it - sure, go for it.
Or are you trying to ask whether you can do them at the same time? There are some joint programs that provide for just that - MD/MA or MD/MPH or MD/JD programs or what have you. Those are designed for you to do them simultaneously. There are also some med students who take a break during med school to earn another degree. I had a friend in graduate school who took a leave of absence after his second year of medical school to get an MPH; he then returned to medical school to finish up. Otherwise I wouldn’t try to do an MD and a non-joint MA at the same time.
