Doubting Myself , Honestly do I still have a chance to get accepted to either UCLA, UCSD or UCI

I graduated from high school in 2013 but because of financial issues I decided that going to a community college in the LACCD district would be the smartest decision at that time. In my first semester I was only going to school until the end of semester where I got a job at an after school program. I was both working and going to school as a full-time student up until Fall 2015. I decided to quit my job because the math classes offered at the community colleges in my city conflicted with my work schedule. I will not post the grades for my remedial classes because they do not effect my transferring GPA. My transferring GPA so far is 3.18. Is there anyway that I would be able to compete with other transferees at UCLA , UCSD or UCI? My major is in Psychology but I would LOVE to become a dermatologist as well. I have an interest for both majors.

My GPA for Fall 2013 is 3.25

Fall 2013
PYSCH 001 - A
ART 201 - B
HEALTH 008- B
CINEMA 003 - B

For both Spring and Fall of 2014 I was still working part time as a full -time student in the same job. In the spring , I received my first D but then retook the course in the spring of 2015.( I did not include the remedial math class I took with the other grades below)

Spring 2014 GPA: 2.28
ANTRHO 101 - D
POLI SCI - B
SOC 001 - A
KIN 291 - A

Full-time Student, Part-Time worker , I was working more hours this semester compared to Spring 2014. (Remedial class grade not included)
Fall 2014 GPA: 2.5
BIO PYSCH - C
ECON 001 - C
CHICANO 052 - A

Winter 2015 GPA: 3.00
HISTORY 012 - B

Spring 2015 GPA 3.20 (Remedial class not included)
ENGLISH 101 - A
ANTHRO 101 - B
BIO 003 - B

In the fall of 2015 I will be taking Chemistry, English 102 , Intro to Philosophy , and my last math remedial class. Planning to take Stats in the Winter. I did not enjoy my time working in an after school program because the site where I was working at was very unorganized and wanted to quit a semester earlier but decided to finish the school year because I saw how leaving in the middle of the semester would make it difficult for both the students and a new worker to adjust too. The only volunteer work I had is my job at the after school program and the few times I would go to the high school where I graduated from, to talk about community college culture/ my experience. At the after school program and I was the science coach in the fall and when I wasn’t doing science, I was in charge of the art club.
My ultimate goal is to major in psychology and minor in biology.

I need an honest opinion and some advice. (Sorry for the long post)

Thank you!

Do you have any D/Fs that could be replaced to bring your GPA up? (Edit: re-read your post and saw that you did make one up)

I’m sorry to be harsh, but a 3.18 will not get you into UCLA. However, there is no rush to transfer, so you could take the time needed to bring it closer to the average admit GPA of 3.8 (https://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof14_mjr.htm#PW)

Also, look into the TAP program at your CC, which will also help with UCLA admissions.

UCSD doesn’t post average GPA per major, but generally admit above a certain GPA. I think this years was a 3.5X something.

Unfortunately a 3.18 also disqualifies you from TAGging UCI which requires a 3.4
http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/tag-matrix.pdf
However, you may be eligible to TAG to a different UC campus.

If I were you, I’d take another year or so, take as many fluff classes as possible, and to some GPA repair. You’ve got some good ECs, but your GPA should come first.

Also, I found this site to be helpful https://uctap.universityofcalifornia.edu/students/index.cfm

For example , If I were to pass all my fall classes with A’s , would it be a smarter Idea to retake the classes that I go C’s in for the Spring? And How do you find out the exact GPA in order to be TAGed in other Uc’s such as UCSC, UCSB or Merced? (edit: I already found it)
Ps. Thank you for the advice from the earlier post

You can’t retake classes that you got C’s in. You can only retake them if you get D’s or F’s.

Retake Anthro 101, and do the math to see what your GPA would be IF you get an A or B. The C in Bio Psych really hurts you, since you want to major in Psych, but there’s nothing you can do about it. I think at this point UCLA and UCSD are not really options, unless you stay at CCC longer.

Irvine’s TAG bases eligibilty on your GPA by the end of summer, so your Fall grades won’t factor for TAG, BUT doing well in Fall could help gain admission to Irvine. Irvine’s Psych and Social Behavior major is less competitive than their Psych major. I say work hard this a Fall and apply to Irvine and see what happens, but plan on staying an extra year as luckie suggests.nif you get into Irvine great, but if not, reapply the following year with a higher gpa.

I’m a product of the LACCD system too. It took me a bit longer than most to finally transfer. I barely took any classes my first two years of CC. I only took six units total my first year at CC! The reasons were mostly financial as I couldn’t even get a class fee waiver and had to pay for those out of pocket. Anyway, I didn’t even successfully transfer my third year of CC. In my 4th year, I finally got into all of the schools I applied to. I agree with Candles in that you should re-take Anthro 101. I was so bummed when I got my first B in stats, but my school didn’t let me re-take it. Speaking of math though, are you going to take stats? My instructor for it (Kazimir at East Los Angeles College) pretty much guarantees you a B grade if you take every test and turn in the homework. I had a tough schedule when I took his course and he was the most generous grader I’ve ever had.

Anyway, I wish you luck  Taking a third or fourth year is no problem. I actually managed to amass 100 units after those rocky two years and now my CC doesn’t even want me taking summer classes there or anything lol. They want me to leave :stuck_out_tongue:

He already retook Anthro and got a B in it.

I am going to my third year of college in the fall of 2015, and I know many are recommending me to take another year. I honestly do not mind but I will admit that I am pressured to graduate as fast I can from my mother. My brother took 7 years to get his BS because he was changing majors but she was upset. I was looking into the TAP program for Santa Cruz since it is one of the schools I want to apply too.

College isn’t a race, people take as long as they need to complete their degree. Don’t rush through it just to be ‘done’.

If you really want UCLA/SD/I, take another year.

Plus 3 years at CC isn’t really out of the norm

You really need to build up your skills so improving your grades for another year at the CC would be a good thing.

Most of the UC’s are on the quarter system, so you only get 10 weeks to get good grades.

The UC’s are difficult and at a 3.18, you would have a hard time within the quarter system.

Get practice at getting good grades at the CC and keeping up with the syllabi, then apply.
