Downhill Skiing - gear, tips, travel advice,

Looks like we need a new thread for the new ski season

I’ll start with asking if anybody has used Glade Optics goggles? Saw mention of the “Adapt 2” goggles in a FB group, got curious. They have 25% off sale.

Never tried them, but they have a 30 day return policy. Price is right.

I personally wear the Julbo Lightyear. It ventilated very well, has great photochromic lenses and we were dealers so I got them at cost.

If I was paying full price I’d seriously consider the Smith 4D Mag. The field of view is pretty big and the lenses easily change.

Nothing to add here other than I envy all of you whose joints still enable you to enjoy this pursuit. :skier: :tada:

I’ve traded my membership for the cross-country/pickleball/moderate hike crowd now. :walking_man:

We have been wearing Blenders for the last few years. They are a local San Diego company with a store close to us. Lenses are super easy to change on the slopes if needed.

Yesterday I bought everyone a new pair of Smartwool ski socks that I found online at TJMaxx for $16.99 a pair which is less than half price. I will put these is the Christmas stockings.

We are starting to plan our long trip which will be the last week in February through the first week in March. We changed to Epic passes from Ikon for this season. We will drive to Tahoe and ski a couple of days at Heavenly then a day at Northstar. Then we will head to Park City for 2-3 days of skiing. D2 will fly into Salt Lake and we will pick her up and head to Silverthorne and ski Breckenridge and Keystone. After that we will go to Avon and ski Beaver Creek and Vail.

Sierra Trading Post (affiliate of the TJ Maxx company) had a HUGE amount of Smartwool (and other brand) ski socks and other outerwear ski gear a couple of weeks ago.

Our local Sierra also has a big selection of goggles, ski wear (pants, gloves, jackets etc) and helmets - all at very good prices. Not looking to buy much, if anything, this year as I only ski occasionally these days but have had good luck at skis.com for skis/boots for S24 who is an avid skier.

Sounds like fun! I bought one day EPIC (will probably use on Thursday skiing with daughter…. thinking Keystone? - they are known to make a lot of early snow). Also 4 day Ikon.

My skiing is mostly mellow blue cruiser run, on cherry picked weather/driving days (retirement is nice that way). Hubby no longer skis but does not mind driving me to the mountains - sometimes we make iti into an overnight getaway. Someday I’ll need to give it up. But I started at age 8, and it will make me sad to someday end the downhill skiing chapter. In the meantime, I’ve started up other outdoor hobbies (running, walking, hiking, snowshoeing, pickleball). That will soften the blow when the downhill skiing no longer makes sense.

Just found Snow Deer Heated gloves on sale on Amazon. They were rated pretty highly - so picked up a pair for S.

My H really loves his heated socks!

A friend swears by glade optics goggles. Says they are the only ones he has used that don’t fog up.

Bought DH heated gloves last season. He liked them. Since I don’t know how much longer we will ski, I don’t plan to buy more “stuff”. Enjoy your early ski day!

I was thinking about trying on some Glade goggles. Got excited learning their western HQ is in Breckenridge CO. Alas, office no shop.

I was also in the “no stuff mode” (other than replacing the 25 year old skis/bindings in 2023). But… then I realized that everything about skiing is splurgy… might as well keep well equipped and safe. Plus I have a daughter that will probably like my hand me down stuff.

We stopped owning equipment several years ago. We only ski about a week or so a year and it’s a PITA to lug the equipment. So we rent and try out the latest stuff every year. We do own our own helmets though.

D2 found this one piece ski suit at the TJMaxx in Beverly Hills when she was visiting a friend in LA last weekend. The price at TJMaxx was $199.

I’ve never had a one piece ski outfit. Not sure on the logistics in the car or ski lodge (to avoid being too hot). But if I saw one cheap in a thrift shop, I’d give it a try. That’s how I get various clothing for running, pickleball etc. Tomorrow will be cold, and I’m not yet acclimated to winter. So one of my layers may be a thin t-neck top with thumholes and a hood that foots under my helmet.

My S bought a kids ski outfit at Costco. It was like $14. He says it will serve. DIL has a nice ski outfit.

I had a one piece ski outfit back in the day (it was purple!). I found it completely impractical.i like to take my ski jacket off and put it on the chair when coming in for a break or a meal. And then there’s the issue of using the restroom. Always a challenge to have to unzip and then hold the sleeves to keep them from hitting the typically wet, dirty floor.I bought it from a ski club sale event, and I guess I know why it was on sale.

@jym626 I had a hot pink one piece ski suit back in the day! I mostly wore it in our local Southern California mountains where it was not as cold. I remember it was a pain for using the restroom.
