I know this is a great problem to have, but my son wants to retake after getting 2300 the first time. He didn’t really study and feels like he can improve his writing score in particular (an 8). Could this hurt his chances with schools because they’ll think he’s a crazy perfectionist? He’d like a shot at Stanford. Thanks!

With colleges that look at all scores, if he performs worse, it will show. Otherwise, retaking it should be fine. One of my friends retook the SAT 3 times. First time he got a 2300, then he retook and got a 2340, and then he retook and got a superscored 2400. He’s going to MIT.
