Damien Lewis In Homeland. The actress who played Dexter’s girlfriend this season is Australian

Not always. You ever see the movie “Inchon” with Laurence Olivier playing the role of Douglas MacArthur? Dreadful version of an American accent. Same with Hayley Mills in “Parent Trap,” although she can be excused since was just a kid at the time.

Also I recently saw a movie in which Emma Watson played the role of an American college student. She gets gets it right most of the time, but the British would slip through every now and then. Same when Emma Thompson plays an American role - occasional slips.

Re Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice: she gets her American accent right because she is half American. She grew up in both the US and England, and she lives in North Carolina according to Wikipedia. Her mom is the actress Rosemary Harris. Jennifer was also in The King’s Speech playing Lionel Logue’s wife. I never understood why she wasn’t more successful after P and P. I thought she was lovely in that part.

I’ve heard many Americans sound pretty lame to my ears when doing an English accent. Natalie Portman in “V for Vendetta” comes to mind. But some Americans have done accents so well that they impressed or even fooled the Brits. Renee Zellweger in the Bridget Jones and Beatrix Potter movies was said by the Brits to be quite good. And Lisa Eichorn in the movie “Yanks” was so convincing that many British viewers assumed she was in fact a Brit.

How about playing ugly? Donna Murphy, quite lovely IRL, [IMDb Photos for Donna Murphy (I)](Donna Murphy on IMDb: Movies, TV, Celebs, and more... - Photo Gallery - IMDb), played Fosca in the Stephen Sondheim musical Passion - a woman shut off from the rest of the world because she was so ugly.

She was amazing (and received a well-deserved Tony for the role). Sometimes it can be more than a job.

I loved that movie Yanks! Lisa Eichorn was wonderful. I saw herwithin the last few years on a British TV series, one of the mysteries shown here on PBS.

I thought Renee Zellweger’s British accent was excellent too. Also Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma (another of my top favorites, although I don’t care so much for Gwyneth personally any more.)

Dang it dang it dang it. I’m almost done with Season 2–there’s lots of things that happened I thought were kind of dumb, and have changed somewhat waht I think of some characters, but really like some others a lot, probably more than most of you pros. (I’ve been reading along on the main thread, but careful not to get beyond where I was.)

And then, dang it!!! I decided to google the name of my personal favorite character, just to get some idea of what others thought, and was going to specify Season 2–so as not to get ahead of myself.

But Google auto-filled in, with several pieces of crucial info that hadn’t happened yet (stuff you all are probably seeing this season.) Now i’m so sad i don’t know if i can keep watching!

Stupid Google, stupid me for googling. (and please don’t guess here what I read, in case there’s more I missed)…I’ll probably keep watching–it’s so addictive–but I’m so sorry I saw that! :(

garland - I think I probably stumbled onto the same thing as you did. Was just trying to read a perfectly innocent article, and there it was :(

So frustrating, right? I had read something last week about one of the most main characters, that hadn’t happened yet, but it didn’t bother me as much. This particular thing seems so entirely unfair, like the series couldn’t allow some futures to be good, (breaking class lines is apparently a sin, I guess.) Well, I am sure i’ll continue to watch, but, dang.
