Downton Abbey

Season 6 arrived today thanks to Amazon. I’m still old-fashioned with DVDs. No spoilers, I promise. I thought that CCers would enjoy knowing that even on DVD, you get the Viking Cruise commercials. I have sent Hubby into his man cave to hibernate - he wants to watch on PBS. I’m about to launch my binge to the end!! Early AM appointment - I may need several evenings to finish.

Enjoy, Momofadult! Mine comes tomorrow, but I’m not going to watch it. [-( Also got it on Amazon with Prime! But those of you who are BJ’s club members - there is a clipless coupon in the current booklet, and you can get the DVD for $18.99! Wish I had waited…Anyway, it is fun reading all the comments here. I will miss it all when it’s over.

For the Matthew Goode fans, if you follow PBS on Facebook, they have a 90 second video devoted to his role in the season as Mary’s new suitor. Just a nice Diet Coke break kind of thing:)

Three more episodes down and I’ll finish tonight! I feel as excited as a little kid waiting for a birthday party - nice to know that there is a child still lurking in this middle-aged body!

Does anyone else have an irrational desire to wear those gorgeous 20’s clothes? The corset-age fashion was fun to look at, but I could feel my rib cage aching the entire time. Not what I would choose for daily wear.

It’s not irrational - they’re beautiful with all the beading and the sheer overlays. aaahhh. And Mary is stunning in everything Anna puts on her! I was just admiring her on the cover of my season 6 DVD that arrived today. Must. Not. Watch.

I love the headbands and long gloves. It still just amazes me how they would get dressed up just yo have dinner with family.

It seems all they do is dress up and eat fancy meals.

I wonder how often the servants dry clean or wash their suits and robes in real life.

Did they have dry cleaning in those days? Or did one just brush off the dirt?

Dry cleaning started very early.

In the opening scene of John Wayne’s last movie “The Shootist,” the aging gunfighter played by Wayne remarks on the solvent odor the new dry cleaning process has left in his suit coat. That movie was set in 1901.

Huh. I did not know that.

My d has watched the entire season online from a British site. No spoilers… she said that Julian Fellowes wraps everything up… no loose ends.
I always wonder about Mr. Bates and all the shoes he has to polish. He seems to have a lot of time on his hands other then helping Lord G on and off with coat and jacket and bringing suitcases upstairs and downstairs. Of course his other skills came in pretty handy when they were all in London for Rose’s debut.

Very interesting, coolweather! Thanks! (and it reminded me I had to go pick something up!)

I posted this on the spoiler thread, but it’s not a spoiler. My D lives in Chicago and will be going to this exhibit of Downton fashions at the Driehaus Museum. Looks fabulous!

Actually they’d pretty much done away with corsets by the mid-20s. They showed Mary undressing this season and she had on a simple brassiere and underpants.

^^^The exhibit is touring the country. It’s going to be in Cincinnati this summer. Here are the cities and the dates:

You will all probably laugh. Before happy hour, my g/f and I were strolling in the mall. We stopped at the Polo shop. On the sale rack was a dress with a black slip, the overtop of black with vertical beading. Me, “that is so DA!” It is knee length, but so pretty, that we both bought the dress.

I have no weddings in near future, never get that dressed up, but we both just fell in love with the quality and look of that dress. Did I mention it was reduced by 2/3? Even so, I have never bought a dressy outfit without an occasion in mind.

Good for you, @bookworm! It sounds lovely and I can understand wanting the bargain, even without a specific occasion in mind.

I did something similar a few years ago, buying a real bargain of a black cocktail dress. I hadn’t had a chance to wear it after a year, so this Christmas, when it was just DH and me, I suggested we dress more formally than we normally do. I wore the dress and new gray pearls Hubby had gotten me for Christmas, he put on a suit. It was fun - we both changed quickly out of the casual clothes we’d been wearing for preparing dinner, had a relaxing meal, then changed back to jeans to clean up. If we’d had kids at home, we wouldn’t have required the dress code for those uninterested in participating.

Mo of adult,
I was joking about going to a downtown restaurant, looking all “Mary” . Having fun pretending.

I will try to find the link. Just love this beaded dress, though never owned one before.
