Is anyone here watching Downton Abbey? It is a period British drama following the Crawley family just before the first World War. It comes on PBS in the US on a delayed timeframe but the second season is now being broadcast in the UK. I am HOOKED on it, it has become something more than a TV show to me. The first season is on Netflix and I suggest you check it out!

LOVE IT!! Season 2 is playing now in the UK.

I’m keeping up with it online. I can’t believe how crazy this season has gotten! I seriously can’t make it through an episode without crying. Episode 5 left me shaken for days but ep 7 was a doozy as well. I can’t believe it is almost over until next year. :(

where can you see season 2 online?

I use s i d e r e e l. com Tumblr is also a good resource.

No spoilers! I can’t wait till season 2 comes to PBS Masterpiece Theater.

I have it on my Christmas list!

No point in making a thread when you can’t talk about what is going on in the second series. It is too good. I can’t believe we there is only two episodes left and the Christmas special.

I loved it and recommended Season 1 to my daughter via Netflix streaming. She loved it and mentioned it would be a perfect gift for her grandmother who enjoys things without significant language issues. I can’t wait for Season 2. I’m assuming it will return to PBS in January.

I can’t wait for season 2… to come to Itunes. But I will try the others as well. It might get to broadcast TV where I am in about a year…I don’t want to wait…

I agree! This season has been a roller coaster of emotions! Every episode makes me shakey/weepy but episode 5 was the worst in terms of emotional turmoil. I feel like this season has been sloppily written compared to last season, but I’m sure the third season will redeem us. I totally ship Matthew/Mary and I hope Lavinia ends up with Edith. It may seem a little unreasonable but I think every fandom needs an impossible lesbian ship.

theaterbrat, that was a spoiler as far as I am concerned… telling who is/isn’t in ]relationships by a specific episode. Please don’t, since most of us don’t have access to Season 2 yet (or prefer to wait until we can watch it on a TV screen vs. a computer screen). Thanks.

Just watched this series! This is amazing, thank you, so much for suggesting.
I am not reading the above posts, don’t want any spoilers .
Quality acting and breathtaking photography!!!

I am not sure whether to thank all of you for this suggestion or not! I don’t subscribe to cable, never watch TV except for the occasional breaking news, or when I do something mind numbing like pressing clothes… I was sick the last couple days and watched the first season on Netflix and now I am hooked! I may have to feign this flu a bit longer so I can watch 2nd season online.

The strange thing about this show is that I don’t think it’s that good – the writing and storylines are so inferior to Upstairs, Downstairs and other Masterpiece classics – but it’s just as addictive as better shows. Somehow, the soap opera machinations suck me in even as I’m rolling my eyes and thinking, “No way, I don’t buy it” or “Now ANOTHER character ripped off from US/DS?” (Gay footman who sleeps with nefarious houseguest; politically active daughter who buys scandalous Bohemian clothes and gets the servants into trouble when she attends rallies; innocent kitchen maid from the provinces who distracts herself from rotund cook’s abuse by dreaming of footman; deeply conservative butler who takes immense pride in maintaining the traditions of his work falls on sword to protect the household from shame [though the master never accepts anyone’s resignation]; head housemaid who is patient big sister to all the junior staff and devoted to the family loses her love interest; I’m losing count.)

I would be willing to watch just for the costumes and interiors, anyway.

AND the segment lifted practicaly in toto from the film “Mrs Miniver” (Aristocrat wins flower show year after year and then concedes to lowly local)
But I have been sucked into watching the show, just because I love this genre. (the best of which is still the film “Gosford Park”, from which Maggie Smith packed up her characterization of the demanding dowager and brought it along to Downton)

Hanna and musicaamerica, I agree completely. Downton Abbey is, however, better than the really mediocre ‘new’ US/DS. The only good thing about the latter was Eileen Atkins - even Jean Marsh left me cold trying to play an older Rose. But of course I’ll watch anyway when the next series comes along!

AGREED Booklady— I really dislike the new US/DS. So disappointing and each episode is just too,too predictable for words.

Moderately funny BBC parody on some of the questionable scripts and production values of Downton:
