Doxycycline price - wth?

I take Doxycycline for my rosacea. It had calmed down for a couple of yearsa lot so I had not renewed my prescription for a while but it flared up again so had to get some today. it used to be one of the ones you could get 90 for $10 last time I got it. Today one month supply cost me $60!! Thought I’d been royaly ripped off by Walgreens (I had 3 scrips and assumed the others were what was costing till I got home), then found a bunch of stuff online about how the drug manufacturers have jacked its price up several thousand percent. Guess I’ll be taking it for a month then hope my rosacea stays calm for a while. crazy.

Is there any other member of the tetracycline family that would also work? I see even Costco’s prices are ridiculous. I don’t know if they’re cheaper than what you’re paying, but anyone can buy prescriptions from them, member or no, at least in CA.

There are also online pharmacies if you ever decide to go that route.

I’ll have to look into it and see if i can find it cheaper elsewhere. For some reason the doxycycline works the best for rosacea (they even make a special one - oracea - specially for rosacea as it but that is hundreds a month which is why I stuck with the doxycycline.

Well, my rosacea went through a couple of very calm year - maybe a month’s worth of treatment will send it back to sleep again.

Just looked at your link - that is a lot cheaper. Unfortunately we don’t have costcos in OK. Will have to check out some other places as well.

I wasn’t nearly as upset about my total prescription bill when I assumed it was one of the other meds that was high (assumed it was the nasal spray they gave me to reduce the swelling in my sinuses). It was a shock to realise it was the previously very reasonably priced antibiotic I have taken on and off for years.

swimcatsmom, you would think that having several generics on the market would make pricing more competitive… Nope.

You can try this website. It gives you pricing info for all your local (and available online, I believe) pharmacies. It’ll even link you to coupons or offers from the manufacturer for saving.

[Prices, Coupons and Information - GoodRx](http://www.goodrx.com/)

I used it when I got a prescription filled a few months ago. It helped me find out about an offer by the producer where they’d cover the difference between your insurance and what it costs. For every refill after that through the new year it’s only $10. Saved me $40 on the first filling alone.

If you’re OK with WalMart, it has doxycycline as one of its $4 medications, so you could probably get 90 days supply for $12 or so, if it meets your needs and you aren’t boycotting them as some are.

Are you paying for this yourself or is it that your copay has gone up a lot?

scm, I also found out about this problem 2 weeks ago when my Labrador’s Lyme disease flared up again. A script for doxy that cost $40 in April was more than $160 in August! And she is NOT covered under my insurance plan, even with PPACA. ( )

I posted about it on facebook, a friend mentioned that this drug used to be on the “cheap list” (I don’t know what it’s really called) at Target, but not any more.

Evidently there’s a “shortage”. Which I don’t get, because this is an OLD, GENERIC, PLAIN VANILLA antibiotic. Seems fishy to me.

When drug companies can’t make a profit, they stop making the drug and focus on something they find profitable. This causes shortages and prices rise. Nobody makes these drugs because they want you to feel better. It’s a business

Doxy is prescribed for Lyme. Lyme is rampant. Lots of demand. Price goes up. Something w/ manufacturing, too - there has been a shortage. http://emergency.cdc.gov/HAN/han00349.asp</a></p>

It’s not on Walmarts $4 list any more. I checked that yesterday as that is where I had bought it last time (a couple of years ago).

I have a high deductible health insurance plan and nothing, including prescriptions, is covered until I meet that deductible. (well certain wellness check ups are). I don’t know what it would be once I met the deductible. I may need to check that out and decide whether to stick with the HD plan next year. The cost for it and the other plan have been getting closer together the last couple of years.

I use a prescription facial cleanser and a cream for inflammation for rosacea. My insurance won’t cover them, and they are very expensive. It’s annoying, but I think they know that when it’s something for your face, you’ll pony up the dough.

I just remembered that I vented about this when it happened (#6726). Grr.

Yep…doxycycline is expensive NOW that there is a shortage. Funny that places were giving it away previously for $4… Or less. Now it is well over $200 a month if you are paying out of pocket.

My pharmacist claims the shortage will end…soon. Of course, I’m wondering if it will ever appear on the $4 a mont list again. Betcha not soon!

Ridiculous.
