Just posted a picture of Michigan Stadium on his facebook!
Great to know that someone so accomplished is an alum!
Always good to see a Wolverine do well. Can’t say that I agree with his view on several matters, but it would be great to see a second Wolverine sit in the Oval Office…not that it is going to happen anytime soon. I don’t think Dr. Carson is a likely candidate to make it past the Primaries.
Carson is already DOA: 1) his comments about the gay population have probably cost or will cost him 3MM votes; 2) his comments about black culture will probably cost him 5MM to 10MM votes.
He is clearly a very smart and driven guy, but seems temperamentally unsuited to the office. The phrase “judicial demeanor” and the phrase “judicial demeanor” are both used with respect to the judiciary. In this regard, whether demeanor or temperament, Carson is not presidential timber. Rob Portman, another UM grad, seems to be a guy who could be either VP or President, but also has a bad trackrecord relative to comments about the gay community and does not have the requisite grassroots support. Portman is more plausible than Carson, but neither is suited to the top job. The UM grad that I thought might have a chance was Gephardt but he never got it going. Other than those 3, I don’t see a UM grad at the national level who would be even plausible in this cycle.
Agreed blue85. His views on evolution (surprising considering that he is a scientist) and gun control are equally as unfortunate, although not likely to cost him votes. The next election will be very interesting to be sure.
On a related note, when I was in college back in the mid 1990s, one of my neighbours was Harold Ford (a Michigan Law school student at the time). After college, he entered politics (Democrat) and was elected Congressman for Tennessee in the early 2000s. I thought he had the temperament and charisma to go far in politics, but like Gephardt, his career seems to have fizzled as well.
Harold Ford had the same problem that Jimmy Carter with Billy Carter: a passel of unfortunate relatives who were, my memory may be very defective here, sketchy with regard to their relationship with the law. So he seemed to be pari passu with Obama at the same moment and then completely disappeared.
