Dragging You Down to Hades

Can SAT II scores ever drag your chances down (I’m talking scores above 600 here) or are they there mainly to help?
So basically, can scores above 600 ever shut you out of the running for admissions to anywhere?
I asked mike this and he said no. I want to know what other CCers think.

Hades means hell.
I meant it metaphorically–don’t worry. No one’s actually going to come up and take your feet and pull you down there.
Be at rest. (Uh-oh, does that sound too much like rest in peace?)

Lmao shineyday bout the whole hades thing.

Ummm idk i think it depends on what colleges your going to. I mean if your applying at like HYPS or something like that, then yeah 600s will drop your chances down a bit. But if its a lower reputation college, then no they will probably be okay with it. Like somebody in another thread told me that ppl with low 600s SATIIs get accepted into Colgate. :)

Well, think about it this way. That mike person was somewhat right in that they can only help you, but most of the people applying to higher-level schools have SAT scores in thr 700+ range or even higher. So, they are all being “helped” by having those high schores, and it ends up being detrimental to you because they have an advantage over you.

I’m not sure if that answers your question, but in no means is it a difference that makes a HUGE impact. You still can get accepted to very good colleges (including Ivy’s) but you obviously have to have an amazing application because you are competing with people with better SAT scores.

Interesting.
nikkigirl12: The Hades post was my unique and subtle way of bumping the thread.
I just meant generally–would it shut you out from anywhere, not mentioning certain schools…?
clicheusername57: First of all, I would like to express my surprise and regret at your not knowing mike(nthemaddog66). He gives great advice. Go to the Cafe and you’ll see. Second of all, that did answer my question. Thanks.

Yes, they can hurt you. UCLA for example has averages of 728 and 675, I believe, for best, and second-best SAT-II score. So if you score below that, your chances are hurt. By how much? Eh. I imagine this effect is more notable with colleges in the Ivy League.

Quick question: colleges don’t mind if you retake an SAT 2, right? I know I can do much better on the Math1, which I won’t cancel* because I know I did well on US, and will take it again (or Math 2) next year.

I was seriously considering pretending my calculator “malfunctioned”

Hijacking my thread? For that, you will be pulled down to Hades, for real.
And no, you can retake. But don’t be anal and retake a 750+. That’s just stupid.

why didn’t you?
afraid of hades? :)

i think a bad subject test score doesn’t hurt if you have 2-3 high scores (talking about ivies etc. here) – but if your best score is like 620 that’s obviously bad but it doesn’t make you an auto-reject i guess…

OK so (hijacking my own thread here), what if your scores are really erratic? Like 1 really really high score but then the rest are in the 600 range (from high to low 600s)?

P.S. I am pretty scared of Hades, actually. Have you watched Hercules lately? That blue fire looks daunting…

hahah you are funny sunshineyday. How many are “the rest”? That 1 high one will look very good. Idk what grade you are in but you might want to try to retake 1 or 2 of them if you know you could potentially get another high one because colleges look at top 3 for the most part and if 2/3 are very high, one might 600ish might not make a very big difference.

Well, on my SAT I, I have 800 reading, 730 writing, and 640 math.

So erratic scores better not hurt my chances, lol.

OK so specifics now, I guess:
I’m only a sophomore.
I have a 660 on Bio. But I took two yesterday and I know Chem won’t be that good but I’m pretty confident Latin will be in the high 700s-800.

But I’m not talking about myself necessarily. I just want to know the worth of SAT IIs basically.

EDIT: iriseyes, I’m talking about SAT IIs.

Oh you are totally fine then if you are only a sophomore. I am only a sophomore too and alot of my friends took bio their freshman year and completely bombed it (by bomb I mean 550-650’s…aka CC version of bombing something…) and then took chem and others this year…

I would take whatever science you take next year’s SAT if chem isn’t good, then math IIC because apparently it has a generous curve, and stick with the latin if its a good score.

A few years ago, when the Ivies used the Academic Index SAT I and SAT II scores had equivalent weight. I don’t know how the situation looks like nowadays.
Just do your best on the tests and use a variety of different subjects (if you can) - like not Math Level 1 and Level 2 but rather Math Level 2 and a language or a science subject or whatever.

Do SAT IIs affect your chances to get into a certan major?
liek if i take SAT II bio and get a 670ish and then i wanna go for premed, will that hurt my chances of getting in?

ahh sunshiney…we are scarily alike…I took bio and got a 670, and then took chem & world history (but I take Latin!)…I’m not worrying about it-if I bomb chem and world I’ll just us history, latin, or lit (or any combo)

Is Latin easy to get a good score on not hijacking your thread…ish…? You said you were a sophomore and so I am…were you ready for latin this year!?

nikkigirl12: I don’t know, sorry.
AnonPerson1: Good luck! And I guess the same thing goes for me too about taking other tests.
clicheusername57: I was prepared for it and I took it w/o studying at all—I was/am in Latin III though. I only took it this year b/c I’m dropping it for next year. I suggest you wait out one more year if you haven’t already taken it and if you’re not going to drop it. You’ll probably be even more prepared.

yeah, you take latin at the latest possible time…which is june of junior year for most people, because it’s only in like december and june
