Will it look bad to top schools (Ivies, MIT, etc.) if I have taken Drama in my senior year?

I’m taking it 1st semester along with Philosophy, Functions, and Law. 2nd semester is French, Biology, Calculus, and English. All of said courses are at the highest level that my school provides.

OMG. How can you THINK of picking drama? I’m surprised that you haven’t received rejection letters from HYP already, just for considering that possibility!

Perhaps you should…be a normal person and take what you want to take.

Who cares what those elite schools think. Do what you love, because YOU want to do it. If they don’t want you, say F them and move on to do greater things in life. Its just a name. Take Drama because you like it, not because HYP will like it.

haha ok guys, thanks for the advice (and sarcasm - which I can respect)! Drama is something I pursue extra-curricularly. I can do without the course but would still enjoy it. I’m not willing to sacrifice something integral to my being for HYP!

did either of you take similar courses in your senior year?

Won’t it actually look good that you’re taking Drama?

You’re showing that you have a passion. You’re pursuing it. It probably isn’t the usual class from applicants (other than maybe Yale who has a decent Theater program).

@AUGirl, I hope you’re right. It’s just that I see the schedules of other future top school applicants only to find that they are taking ALL traditionally “tough” courses (e.g. Calculus, Physics, etc.). Also, admissions websites constantly cite the importance of “course rigor”.

Do what you like, what interests you, and something that you will be able to enjoy doing. That way, if a school rejects you, they rejected a person who lived their life doing the things they wanted. And if you are accepted, they accepted you for the student who does what they feel passionate about.

I mean… for example, one kid from my school is going to a top school and he was in band/jazz band every single year. He also heavily participated in drama, though only as a club and not as a class.

All of your other classes sound extremely rigorous and/or traditional… why not take one non-rigorous non-traditional class?

And just because it isn’t traditional doesn’t mean it’s not hard… My hardest class ever in high school was AP Music Theory.

^ I wish we had Music theory here! But yeah, I get what you’re saying about balance. It ties in well with my ECs too. I guess I’ll keep it then, thanks for the reassurance!

We only had it last year. We had a 100% pass rate which was amazing… but it was definitely really challenging. It almost kept me from honor role, but I finally managed to get a B- in the class for the year-end grade.

Wow! We need a challenging music course like that at my school. Our music course consists of playing YMCA and the theme to Indiana Jones over and over again…

Our school just has Honors Music Theory and it’s only a semester course…

But we get the same weight for honors and AP classes, which is stupid, but I guess it wouldn’t hurt if I took it for an easy A(I’ve taken piano since I was 4)
