I’m considering majoring in visual communication & design, but the curriculum requires some drawing classes. I know most college drawing classes have students draw nude models, and I would really prefer not to for religious reasons. Do professors usually make exceptions for students like me and have alternative assignments?

If you’re only taking a handful of the most basic drawing classes, then I think it’s pretty likely that the class won’t involving drawing from nude models. If you are in that situation I think most professors would be willing to exempt you or give an alternate assignment. I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

You will have to specifically ask at each college you are interested in, because different schools will have different policies. I do know that at traditional art schools with a rigorous Foundation Year (like RISD), it would be much more difficult for you to opt out of drawing nudes, as they are heavily integrated into the freshman program and you would be missing too many hours of studios and crits. However, at other schools, there may be just one or drawing classes that have nudes, and there it would be easier for them to make an exception, because you wouldn’t be missing as much.
