@parent56: Yaaaa…my score is NOT high…at all. But my SAT is equivalent to a 29…but then again, that’s still too low. I need to get to work. I shall tell him all of the details; I just wanted to confirm everything and take my time in telling him, bc my guidance counselor told him that for the UAB program, the MCAT isn’t required…

I’ll still apply to both anyways…UAB and UCD; and i’ll work hard for the EMSAP thing…it’s best to keep both options open, and just make the decision, after consideration of other factors.

good luck to you 18thsky… hope you end up wherever you want and that med school becomes a reality for you not just a dream…i’m sure you will do well wherever you go. if it happens to be uab, let me know (oh and apply for sci tech honors if you want to do premed there)

@parent56: Thank you so much! I hope I do get to live out my dreams, since these dreams have followed me for a long time. Thanks for the info! When I apply to UAB, I’ll apply to Sci Tech Honors. :)

I think you and your dad are seriously underestimating what it takes to get into UAB EMSAP. I have hared of students getting into Ivies, and not getting into EMSAP.

I would worry about weather you want to go to UAB EMSAP after you get in. Based on what you have posted, I think your chances of getting in this program are very low.

Consider something here:
-Do you want to be a doctor?
If No, forget your dad
If yes, I think your dad has a pragmatic mind, granted you do get into the UAB med program because the MCAT are HARDDDDDD!!! But getting into the EMSAP is hard too and I doubt you will get in anyways.

You did fairly poorly on the SAT for someone who wants to be a doctor…the SAT is baby material compared to what the MCAT tests. Many people trying to become doctors get rejected from EVERY SINGLE med program they apply to after undergraduate school because of low MCATs. They are hard, and considering you didn’t do amazing on the SAT, you are going to have to go hard in college to get a decent MCAT score.

I didn’t read through the entire thread, so I don’t know if this has been answered. But is the UAB premed program binding in that you have to go to the med school there? Or do they let you take the MCATs and apply out? In that case, maybe you could also take the MCATs and apply to Hopkins.

I spent a lot of time creeping over a med school bound students forum, and let me tell you, the MCAT is really, really hard. It is not uncommon for people to study for SEVERAL hours a day for the 3 months before the test (4-8 hours). Also, you probably won’t have as many study materials, since there is going to be a new MCAT in 2015.

Do what you want. If you go to UC Davis, make sure you have a back up plan in-case you don’t get into med school. I would recommend majoring in Bio/ Biochem since that will help with medschool, and if you don’t get in there you could go on to study bio at the graduate level and get a solid research job.

@Northern: Yeaa, I know. My dad and I talked about the EMSAP program…and right now, his goal is just seeing what university I get into, and choosing the best one out of the lot…based on my happiness.

@Catchmoresun: Okie dokie… :)

@Drac313: Yupp. I want to be a doctor…& I know…I will go hard in med school…

but side note/rant: honestly, one can’t just say that I will suck at the MCATs JUST because, according to my high school information & scores, I seem to be a poor student. BTW, one’s gotta consider my high school’s background. Out of the ALL of the students, I have the HIGHEST SAT (2020 superscored updated) score. That’s gotta say something right there…same with my subject scores. It’s all about working hard and thinking outside of the box. Another thing, the high school that I came from, hardly promotes the SATs, and 98% of the kids aim for state schools.

Last time I checked, there were a good amount of past 4.0 & 2400ers who were suffering just the same in med school…so I guess it’s not just about SAT study habits and etc. However, I will most probably be rejected from the EMSAP program…But i did get accepted to the Neuroscience program at UAB (Yay lol)

@Born2dance94: Thanks for the suggestion!

@Catchmoresun: I didn’t know that the EMSAP lets you apply to other schools. I guess we learn something new everyday.

@Flashsizzlebam: Thanks for your suggestions! I intend to work my butt off in college. High school…hasn’t fully captured my potential at all. Im thinking about majoring in Neurobiology & minoring in Art studio…so, let’s see what happens…I don’t even know if I will be accepted or not. Thanks for the encouragement tho!
