Dress boots for the fashion impaired

I am looking for a pair of black boots to wear with a black skirt and grey jacquard dress that I recently bought. I have a long narrow foot: 9 1/2 or 10 narrow, high arch/instep. I need little to no heel because I never learned to walk on heels and am too old to learn. (Plus I rolled my ankle twice and next time I do it I will break my foot.) Maybe 1 1/2 inches at most.

Price range: under $300. I dress conservatively, so plain would be best.

So fashion mavens, what are your suggestions? I am a huge fan of Zappos, but will consider other sites. I usually wear Trotters, Naturalizers. I really need something narrow to keep it from slipping off my heel.

I got a very nice pair at JC Penney. They are flat, “scrunch” style and mid-calf. They were on sale for under $50 and have lasted three winters, though I do not wear them all winter long. Easy Spirit has some for under $200 that are a little more formal and “comfort” made. I would recommend anything Easy Spirit sells-they saved my feet when I developed plantar faciitis many years ago.

I have the same kind of foot and settled on classic, plain black, “riding” boots (no spur straps, thank you) with a flat heel. They look great with long or shorter skirts and skinny jeans. Bought them from Zappos and since I’m moving closets around this weekend, I’ll check on the brand!

I really want to get these [Cole Haan Jodhpur Boot Black - Zappos.com Free Shipping BOTH Ways](<a href=“Cole haan jodhpur boot black + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com”>Cole haan jodhpur boot black + FREE SHIPPING | Zappos.com).

Zappos fans - Do you have any experience with returns?

Zappos, returns are easy, easy, easy. I was afraid that they were going to revoke my zappos buying privileges because I’ve returned so much but no suck luck lol!

Our whole family swears by Zappos. I buy and return regularly with never any problems. Their customer service is excellent, although I rarely need to speak with a human. Everything is handled online.

I really don’t know what the criteria is, but years ago I became a VIP member and now all my orders are shipped with overnight delivery rather than 2 day and all returns are processed faster. I’ve placed orders on Saturday night and they are at my house on Monday. I’m always amazed at how fast they are. VIP has a lot of great perks if you can figure out how to get that classification. I definitely don’t pay anything extra for it.

I have those cole haan boots. Love them, wear them lots with dresses, skirts with tights. I have a high arch. I can’t remember if I bought them july 2012 or 2011 during Nirdstroms anniversary sale. Wish I had them in another color

That is a great price. I think sale was around $250.

Love those Cole Haan Jodhpur boots and what a great price. I too am a huge fan of Zappos, unbeatable selection and with the exception of the very high end designers, you can purchase just about anything online with a great delivery time.

dentmom, I would select something in black suede for the outfits you describe. A tad dressier. With dresses or skirts I wear a narrow calf suede boot with a heel. But you can find plenty with little or no heel.

DD has a pair of black Aldo boots that I would steal…if they fit!

Ok, I just ordered those Cole Haan boots. I ordered them in the brown. I want to get out of my black shoe rut.

I also just ordered the Cole Haan black boots. Narrow unavailable, but I will see how they fit.

I am also a Zappos VIP customer. I found that if I keep a credit with my returns that I get it all the time.

The Aldo boots looked too young and trendy for me.

I will start looking at black suede next. Thanks for the ideas!

^^I bought some nice Van Eli boots last year - a splurge at around $275 but I have very narrow foot and size 10 and really wanted something comfortable. Riding boot style with lower heel…can’t do high heel dress boots!

Zappos customer service is amazing. They’ve certainly lost money on me with the free shipping/free return shipping. I’m VIP too, although I’ve returned about 90 percent of the shoes I’ve ordered. I’ve had foot surgery and it’s really difficult to find shoes that fit and are comfortable. When you drop a Zappos box off at the UPS Store you don’t even have to wait in line. Just walk to the front and set it on the counter. Returns are credited promptly. I always have the credit applied to my credit card rather than a store credit. Once they classify you as VIP I doubt they’d revoke that classification (unlike Sephora’s VIP program which requires that you spend a certain amount each year).

If you are not a Zappos VIP, it is easy to get a 1-day shipping on footwear: buy a clothing item along with the shoes, and that will qualify your entire order for free overnight delivery.

Last year I bought Frye’s Phillip Harness Tall black boots. They are so comfortable and attractive and I get a lot of compliments on them. They were a little over $300 however. I believe about $325

The frye’s look nice, but I really want something dressier and a narrow width.
