Dress people, MOB help???

[J.R. Nites Metallic-Lace Capelet Sheath Dress | Dillards.com](<a href=“Access Denied”>Access Denied)

I’m waiting for my husband (!) to get ready to go out and I’m sitting here looking at Nordstrom’s and then Dillard’s websites. This dress is different…that’s why I like it. Could be good for wedding in Russia? Not sure.

Now we’ve got Countingdown, Garland and Merlin all looking and JEM has found one?? Have I got it straight? Have any of you looked at local boutiques to see if they carry something different that won’t cost an arm & a leg?

Jeesh, my boys are still young. One in college and the other in high school. Hope it’ll be awhile before it’s my turn as MOG. Gotta lose those 10-12 pounds that just found me :frowning: All on the bottom half. :(

^ I have one dress on order but my confidence level is only 50-50. I will see how it really looks when it arrives and then I will have the trauma of trying it on.

Only if it passes both of the above tests will I them send a link to D (the bride) for her approval.

But I would love to have this resolved. So far the MOB dress has been my biggest challenge with this wedding. (Of course D and her fiance are handling just about everything else, so my other main challenge is simply keeping my mouth shut and letting them do their own thing LOL!)

Well, JEM, I’ve tried helping those other mom’s, maybe I can help you too! What are you looking for? Color, shape, size??? I’ll look!

Two dresses arrived today. Four more are on the way.

^^ Thanks, chocchiopcookie!

The wedding is at 10 am in late September in Boston, on the grounds of the Boston Museum of Science (along the river). Not formal – groom and groomsmen will wear blazers and khakis, bridesmaids will wear different short chiffon dresses of their choices in J. Crew’s “spiced wine.” Bride’s dress is a full length sheath, no train.

My challenge is my size – I am a plus size shortie. Between a 16 and an 18 and 5’2". Hope to get to a 16 by time of wedding but can’t count on it. I have a good tailor who can take my dress in if I order larger and do lose the weight. The dress I have on order
<a href=“Access Denied”>Access Denied;
appeals to me but the jacket has glitter which may be too much for morning? The glitter does not show in the picture but when it arrives I will see. I would like a tea length dress rather than knee length for the extra coverage. Also need coverage on top because of a mastectomy. Willing to spend on this challenge to solve the problem. A sleeveless dress with jacket is fine by me – I will just keep the jacket on the entire time.

There will be a rehearsal luncheon the day before so I could use something for that as well, but of course it does not have to be special.

Thank you for taking on this challenge!

I keep repeating this mantra to myself, “It’s the marriage that matters, not the wedding!” But I still want to do my part in the wedding as nicely as possible.

Pretty dress GEM, I think it looks good for the occasion.

Chocchipcookie, you are good at this personal shopper stuff! I have looked over every possible on-line cocktail/MOB dress and my eyes have begun to glaze over. I really need to go to Boston area and find a Nordstrom or similar.

The JR Nites metallic lace is pretty. Hoping it is not too metallic. The capelet is good for added warmth, as northern Russia can be chilly. The coffee color is wicked on sale, so I may have to order it for evening events, if not the wedding . The bride has requested that I wear navy for the wedding itself. It is the only specific request she has made, so I can live with it!–the other request is a navy suit for groom, and a good haircut. He has a history of poor judgement about haircuts!

JEM, I really like that Dillards dress! Elegant, looks like the fabric is well suited to the cut of the skirt and bodice. A few metallic threads could be tasteful and just fine for MOB.
The color would wash me out, lol.

Question: There are currently tons of lace dresses at different price points. Will they look dated soon? How to distinguish classic from trendy? I like some of them, but as MOB I hope to wear something that is not the same as the younger guests will be wearing. I have no idea about young women’s fashion in Russia, except what I can see through a few pics of my kids’ friends on FB.

Hoping Alumother will check in.

chocchipcookie: I absolutely love that dress. I’m so upset they don’t have my size.

Hi again everyone. Thanks for compliments. I really have no special talent, just a bit of time on my hands and enjoy looking at formal fashions. I have a lot of stress in my life and this calms me down.

JEM: Please don’t get mad at me…the dress is a bit matronly. What age range are you? Did you want to find something to compliment the bridesmaids in spiced wine, or that doesn’t matter? Would you mind if I tried finding something a bit more flattering?

Merlin: That lace dress also comes in a dark blue. That’s why I thought of you.

3bm: are you looking for a mother’s dress too??? Yeah, it wouldn’t fit me either. I’ve just gained @10-12 pounds in the last year or so and all in my bottom half. :frowning: Menopause and chocolate :D

JEM: stay tuned. Let’s see what I find.

Don’t need another MOG dress unless I can talk my oldest into taking the plunge. The other two are already married. But could wear it to niece or nephew’s weddings.

I have the opposite problem. Am only 5ft tall and weigh less than 100 lbs. Size 6 is the smallest they have. Finding clothes for a 50 something in this size is a challenge. I can’t always shop in the juniors department.

JEM - This is very different, but I like it…comes in a petite 14/16. Perhaps not dressy enough for the wedding, but would work for the rehearsal?

The Russian wedding - can you remind me of the proper size/color?

It’s fun looking at all the links, but OMG some of the dresses called MOB or MOG do look so matronly. I’d think I think I’d want to dress “older” than the bride, but I would not want to look like the bride’s grandmother. A structured jacket on some of these dresses feels like it does that. Loved this one from earlier [Adrianna Papell Matte Jersey & Taffeta Dress | Nordstrom](http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/adrianna-papell-matte-jersey-taffeta-dress/3070916?cm_cat=datafeed&cm_ite=adrianna_papell_matte_jersey_&_taffeta_dress:) and I like the Eileen Fisher just posted.

JEM:
I like this one…do you? It comes in PETITE size 16-18 and the Vintage Rose color option would compliment the spiced wine that the bridesmaids are wearing. Let me know if you like it.

3bm:

Wow. What a problem to have. So many of us don’t realize how difficult that dilemma is too! Had to take in things that much and still look age appropriate. I’m sure not many store carry such small sizes. Sorry. :(

Thanks, Gourmetmom, but I am afraid a 14/16 would be too tight on me. I am better going with an 18 for now, which can always be taken in if I do manage to lose weight.

Plus, the slip dress is more baring on top than I can handle – have to wear a prosthesis because of my mastectomy and need more coverage on top (did not have any restoration).

But thanks for trying, I know my case is a real challenge.

Oh, and chocchipcookie, thanks for your honest response. Please feel free to suggest whatever and since I have posted my size and issues I can hardly mind any feedback! I am 62 and have no issue with coming off as matronly. That is the least of my issues these days LOL! I just want to look decent – nice, if possible. I never wear makeup, etc.

I do not need to be matchy with the bridesmaids, just don’t want to clash with them. I think mother of groom is wearing green, but she has actually bought several dresses to choose from (does not have my weight issues).

^^Hi JEM!
I just forwarded a dress link to you. What do you think? Honestly…

Oh, chicchipcookie, I just cross-posted with you. I like that Nordstrom Komarov outfit and IF it would fit me could go with it as I agree the vintage rose color would be nice.
I have a Nordstom’s in my area so will try to check it out.

Thanks!

Glad you saw it. The purplish color is actually quite nice too and may be even a better color for late September…more fallish looking color.

The website said Petite 16-18, so hope you try it on and like it!! Nordstrom will mail it to your home free of charge too, no need to go to the store.

Good luck, hope it works out. Now I’ve got to go get my day started!!! :)

This is beautiful. The model is 5’10" and probably wearing a size 2, so it will be longer on a 6/8 woman - probably right at the kneecap, which is perfect.
