I have 2 pair of these sandals. What makes them nice is I have fairly narrow feet, and they have Velcro on the straps so are easily adjustable. I have the Prize 4 and Trophy 2 (and darn I paid full price). @conmama ’s post made me think of them - it looks like Vionics might have Velcro too.
They are very comfortable, but I haven’t worn them for miles/hours.
These are my favorite walking sandals! I wear out a pair each summer when my husband and I do our evening walks (about 3-4 miles each day, on a mix of gravel trails and asphalt).
DH and I walk a great deal on vacations. I’m in the camp that sneakers are acceptable in most instances.
On our next trip I’m planning on wearing my On Cloudflyer 4 on the plane…and packing my Allbirds Tree Dasher 2, along with a pair of Oofos slippers (for showering and recovery in the hotel room). If I was traveling someplace with cool versus warm weather I might pack a pair of Ecco sneakers in place of one of them. (I own sneaker 7s in different colors and Gore Tex ones for wet weather). If I planned on dressing for “nicer” dining venues, I’d probably pack a black pair of Allbird tree breezers…comfortable enough to walk in and don’t require much packing space.
It looks like Allbirds changed the insoles of their sneakers, and they are not as great as they used to be. My kid stole my last pair, and the replacement pair I bought is not the same.
That’s a bummer. I actually find myself purchasing multiples when I find something I really like. It’s frustrating when companies make changes to a beloved product…especially if they don’t change the name of the item and you expect the same product.
I just had the same. Allbirds were my favorite and the last pair didn’t have the wool footbed. It looks like you can buy it separately. I just took the ones our of an older pair. I tend to get a hole in the toe before I wear our any part of the shoe.
I don’t find Allbirds supportive enough either. I wore my OnClouds all over Europe last spring. I packed dressy ballet flats for dinners in the evening. Not the most stylish but it enabled me to walk 20K steps a day without pain.
There are so many examples of fashionable casual outfits with sneakers including jeans, dresses, skirts, linen pants, athleisure…you’ll actually look up to date if you wear a supportive pair of sneakers that are on the newer side and neutral enough to go with most clothing! Avoid too light of a color unless you can easily wipe them clean - who knows what weather or terrain you run into! A pair of navy might be nice and could go with a lot of “colors” of clothing.
You can also add just a light insole to the inside of sneakers for extra cushion - I do this for nearly ALL mine just for a little extra support and cushion - cheap and easy and really do make a difference. Pack a couple pair!
I mentioned taking my Allbirds for travel (they are a few years old so apparently they are the good ones). I also wear/take another pair of shoes I can walk in. That saved me last fall when we had a lot of rain on our trip to Spain/Portugal. My shoes got soaked twice and thankfully I had a second pair to walk in while mine dried out (several of the people in our group did not and ended up wearing wet shoes).
For the trip this fall I plan to wear Vessi waterproof sneakers (a guy on the last trip reccommended them) and pack the Allbirds as well as a pair of black flats for any “dressier” dinners.
Yea, rainy weather can change the footwear needs. Last sept for Rhine river cruise I did spray my sneakers with waterproof spray. Worked fine for small sprinkles, no test in bad storms. If I go to London next month (still deciding) would probably take those and a leather pair.
Last year I started by Super Feet insoles to extend the life/cushion of my running shoes. ($55, but cheaper and “greener” than buy new pair of shoes.). This thread gave me idea to pack an extra set.
My daughter gave me a great idea - throw a Magic Eraser in your luggage in a sandwich bag (weighs nothing) to use to wipe white sneakers that get scuffed. Worked like a charm!
They are so incredibly comfortable on my weird side high arch feet. I have zero pain on oversea trips where we walk all day. I bought the cork for a more neutral shade and the cork was so unbelievably irritating and scratchy next to my skin. I guess I need leather.
I don’t wear sneakers on my trips as my feet get so hot.
I love Merrell Embark slip ons for walking – I’ve been wearing them for a few years now and wore them for extensive walking in Europe this summer, very comfy, good support, no blisters, and they work with casual dresses etc. They are on sale now, so limited sizes available at Merrell. Shoe update: the ones I ordered were cute and seemed comfy (surprisingly) but did not fit my “low volume feet”. Adjustable ankle strap was fine , but the strap across the instep was really loose.
I will order the Naturalizer Vera style, as recommended by @compmom . The other style suggested is cute, but I fear I will have the same issue with the straps.
