Dressing Young (2024)

Ok, I’ll keep going. As I was thrifting for my Poshmark closet at a really nice consignment store, I came across a teal Clara Sun Woo Liquid Leather Jacket. I loved how it stretched like knit, more lightweight but had a “leather/suede” look to it. I really liked the botched collar and his the side hem sort of flared ever so slightly out. It was $17 and I bought it for myself. Turns out it’s a $199 jacket, one of Oprah’s favorite things and they are still selling it at various places. I decided to buy a pink one. I bought it from another place besides the brand website for a little less.

Look at their sizing chart for the proper fit. I’m an 8/M. I purchased the medium from the other site, not reading the CSW size chart first. It was too big, definitely a larger than an 8. I consider M to be 8/10. This fit a 10/12. I returned for a small and it looked and fit much better, but I would consider it a “7” if there were such a size. I can only wear a cami underneath.

Nice find!

I struggle with jeans (don’t we all) because while I am taller than the 5’4" “petite”, I don’t like long jeans at all. Hitting at the ankle is ideal for me (no longer than 27" max). Most jean companies seem to make “standard” length jeans based on runway model heights, or the assumption that everyone will be wearing them with Louboutins. Not enough of the brands that I like offer petite (although some of them are starting to add limited styles in petite.) I know I can get them hemmed, but alteration prices have skyrocketed. I’m not above cutting raw hem jeans myself though :smiling_imp:

@CollegeNerd67 I struggle with pants/jeans as well, mostly b/c at 5’3" my inseam is actually a bit too long for many petite styles but too short for regular length. For example I bought a pair of cropped jeans that were supposed to land (looking at various model shots) maybe an inch above my ankle bone, but instead they looked like long capri pants. I looked ridiculous!

Hemming doesn’t always work, especially with something like flare and bootcut b/c the taper at the knee doesn’t fall in the right spot.

Less expensive brands like Loft, Gap, J. Crew often have a good range of petite pants, but other more expensive brands will have only a few styles offered in petite, which are often sold out.

I did just buy these jeans, also got them in white. They come in three lengths which seems to work best for someone who is not quite petite but not tall (petite, classic and tall sizing).

I bought the “classic” length rather than petite (26" inseam vs. 24"). They probably could stand to be a 1/2"-1" shorter to be perfect length, but if I wear something with a lug sole or heel they will do.

True. I have ordered some petite jeans from Madewell & Gap. You’re right, they do tend to sell out quickly. I noticed on Anthropologie that their popular “Colette” line of pants/jeans is almost always sold out in the petite sizes. You would think that they would realize that more women, even those who aren’t technically “petite”, are looking for shorter length pants & jeans, and they would order more of those sizes.

I’m convinced there is no perfect jean, just the jean that is mostly perfect for you! From length to rise to slim to flared to plain pockets to embellished pockets…it’s a real game!

@conmama how much time do you spend thrifting weekly (or whatever) for your Poshmark? Do you have a roster of stores you regularly frequent for it?

Poshmark was purchased by Naver, a foreign company 18 months ago. They’ve changed the platform and thousands of us saw our sales decline drastically. I’m making about 1/3 of what I used to. I used to shop about 3 days a week, sometimes 4. I love to shop, this filled that need.

Now that sales have decreased I only go occasionally, usually when there are the huge sales at my favorite consignment stores. I haven’t shopped once in March. It was one of the best things about doing this, so a big disappointment. I was clearing $2k a month, with my goal set towards $3k. But then the wool got pulled out from under us and I probably clear $1k a month now. I’m retired, so it’s fun and keeps me busy. I typically just accumulate the money and we invest it, etc. but it’s nice having my “own” money I’ve earned if I want to buy, say, a $130 jeans at Anthropoloie. Lol.

But it’s a bitter pill to swallow after I worked so hard to build my listings.

I admire folks who can wear white jeans. I feel a bit too much like a pig-pen Charlie Brown character for that (and most of our summer stuff involves outdoor seating). But last summer I spent big whopping $2.40 at Kohls clearance for a pair of GV light green jeans. They are too long, so if I tire of tucking them under I may cut them…. not much to loose on the experiment.

I feel the same, Colorado_mom. I have ‘inherited’ a white Lululemon jacket from my daughter and it invariably ends up looking less than pristine. Same with the cozy white hoodie I got from her - I didn’t think I was that messy, but white tells the tale, lol.

Just easier to stick with forgiving, dark colors!

I ordered 3 different sizes of Catherine style of Kut from the cloth from Amazon. I also have a pair of Frame jeans coming today.
I’ll try Mother if these don’t work.
Thanks for all the info.

I hope you find a pair that work for you!

Just curious - How many pairs of jeans do people here typically buy in a year? How many do people own? I think I bought one new pair and surprisingly hadn’t worn it a year later. I did buy one pair with a bigger flare this year, and I’ve worn that pair 3 times or more. But like many others, I wear athleisure stuff (leggings/joggers/shorts)much of the time (I’m retired and play a lot of pickleball). I probably own 15 pairs if I include different colors, but they don’t get much wear.

(Forgive possible grammar mistake… is it one pair and 2 pairs? I’m not really sure ).

I’m probably about the same. This year I bought 2 pair of flared with the inside slit from Express. Blue and black. I found I’ve worn the blue more than any other jeans. I’d say at least 8 I never wore at all. I’m going to get rid of a few after the winter that I haven’t worn in 2 years. I find it overwhelming having too many pairs of jeans.

I have two pair of black jeans, 2 pair of dark blue, 1 light blue, and 1 cropped. I bought a pair of flared jeans this year. I would say that’s typical for me since jeans last a while and I tend to not necessarily follow trends.

I’m not much of a jeans person…though have one pair right now that I can wear most anytime of year and really like. I probably have 3 pairs total. Much higher amount of leggings and joggers!

I wear jeans almost every day winter (long) and summer (shorts). I have five pairs of blue skinny or narrow straight-leg jeans that all look alike (two are identical), three pairs of jean shorts (blue) and two white, one blue denim short skirt, one white, and one black. None of these items was purchased recently (ahem, in the past three years or so). I vary the look with tops. I do own a few dress slacks, but my wardrobe is extremely simple and mostly black, white, beige, and navy for easy coordination. I don’t have any athletic wear and, clearly, don’t spend any time thinking about clothes. I just check in here from time to time to see what you all are wearing.

I’m much more comfortable in Athleisure than in jeans. I currently own 4 pair - 1 skinny, 1 shinny grey and 2 straight leg. I’m thinking about buying a pair of trendier jeans.

Unless I am running, I really no longer wear shorts. I find linen pants more comfy. I have also gotten into wearing midi length sundresses in the summer. I used to love short dresses but have realized the front of my legs should not be shown in public.

I wear shorts for both biking and pickleball, but they tend to be long shorts, not short (and I have the goofy tan to prove it - about 4 inches on top of my knee). I also tend to buy at or below the knee dresses, but not many maxi dresses.

A few summers ago a friend mentioned that as she got older she decided to wear casual summer dresses instead of shorts. That seemed a good idea, and I bought some casual summer dresses. LOL - then last year I bought 3 pair of new shorts (two same style, in a nice petite size, good fit - hard to find). I’d be better about tossing some of my old shorts if I didn’t do so much gardening.

As per jeans, I probably add about 2 pair per year if you include colors (black, grey, purple, light green), some of them at thrift store. As I’ve lost weight, always hoping to find a more flattering fit. But I don’t wear them a lot at home. Going out I often do end up in a pair of black jeans - they just pair well with various tops and sweaters. (Plus I’ve ended up with new, good deal short black boots last year and this year - high heel and low).
