Dressing Young (2024)

Any advice on admitted-student events wardrobe for a mom? Probably just aiming for a classic look, not trendy, and I realize it probably needs to look OK with tennis shoes.

I don’t wear shorts anymore either unless I’m at home or running errands. I used to wear “fancy” shorts (my favorite being WHBM) with wedges sometimes when I’d go out at night, but no more. I do still wear shorter dresses, but try to find them that hit a couple inches up from my kneecap. As much as I love them, my body silhouette looks terrible in cute midi sundresses.

What will the weather be like?

Should be nice because it’s in a few weeks. 70s and sunny, I think. It’s west coast, too.

Recently caught a few videos from Marnie Goldberg @msgoldgirl maybe on you tube and she had these pants in a post. Not a fan of W but decided to try and they are adorable, the stitching is actually white (on navy) and a cute contrast, price is crazy good. I’d wear with a short sleeve tee and take a crop or short jacket for socal.

Any suggestions on brands of linen pants?

We were at a brewery last Sunday, and a woman was wearing some cropped by fuller-legged linen pants and a long-sleeve linen shirt she had knotted at the waist. I thought she looked so chic but comfortable. Definitely more polished than the average brewery guest, but not out of place dressed up (if that makes any sense). Seeing her made me think I should look into some linen. I used to wear it all the time - not sure why I stopped???

What kind of event? Outdoors, indoors? I don’t think you can ever go wrong with a dress.

I don’t think I can ever stop wearing shorts, I love wearing them. But I would say I lean more towards skorts now which just give a little length though they are still above knee. But I would wear neither for like a nice dinner out or anything. I don’t go out a lot so shorts for the house or errands or skorts for a casual dinner out work fine.

Me too! In olive. Not usually one to wear that color but I liked the jacket.
I used to move my clothes seasonally when I worked, but not since I retired.

When I think of linen I think of Eileen Fischer

Something like this?

I have several items from J. Jill - I have a long-sleeve linen blouse from there; and they have linen trousers as well.

Mostly outdoors, I think.

Love those! Thanks!

Are you tall? I don’t have a lot of experience with J Jill, but in the past I have found that brand to work better for taller folks

Eileen Fisher has a lot of linen and linen blend clothing! That’s the only brand whose linen I can wear even though I’m allergic to wrinkled clothes.

I love linen. If you want elastic waist style lots of brands in lots of price points. Quince, Old Navy even Athleta. If you want a more fitted style look at Garnet Hill. If you want a splurge look at the linen pants from Frank and Eileen.

No, I’m short - but J Jill has petite sizes!

I’m sorry, but I need more info. Are you talking about walking around, a party, a meet and greet?

I had a random pop up on my social media for linen pants by NYDJ. They have tall & petite sizes too.

It also would help to know the vibe of the school. My older daughter’s school: a sea of Lilly Pulitzer and J. McLaughlin. My younger daughter’s school: jeans and spirit wear t-shirts.

I always say you can’t go wrong with a polished pair of jeans (a medium or darker wash, no rips or raw edges), a crisp white button down and a nice pair of loafers or mules. Pair it with an oversized pair of sunnies and a statement necklace, if you want to be fancier.
