Dressing Young (2024)

I’ve never loved a midi dress. I had my H ask the women he works with what length they’re wearing and they all said long. So now I’m on the hunt for a long dress. I ordered this one, but it may be a little flashier than I want. Would prefer it in black or navy, and not sure about the jewel thing above the keyhole.

Here is a dress in navy also from Macys:

Here is a black gown:

Nordstrom has a lot of “formal” long dresses on sale for less than $200 right now.

I’ve found both Vince Camuto and Ralph Lauren usually have some nice long dresses in navy and black.

Please help me choose a dress to wear as a guest to a wedding this Saturday.

I don’t know if it makes a difference, but it is a gay (male) wedding. Time is 5:00 pm, venue is a Presidential library, and the dress code is, “evening attire.” I do know that long gowns are not expected.

Shoes are not necessarily what I’d wear with all of these choices.

You look gorgeous in all, Hoggirl. I’d vote for the fourth as it somehow seems the most elegant and chic.

They all look great. I think I’d go with 1. I love 3 but it’s a bolder choice of color.

They are all pretty dresses and look so nice on you! For a wedding, I’d veto the red color (but if the price is right keep it for the holidays).

You look fabulous in all the options!

My vote is #4 since it’s an evening event and for the venue.

I would choose either #4 or #1. You look great in all of them!

I like #1 because it’s elegant yet fun with the sleeves.

LOL.
Those sleeves would drive me crazy!

If you’ve got a great necklace I’d go with 2 or 3.

I like them all as well. If you’re comfortable with red, I love the burgundy of #3. I’m not a fan of the sleeves in 1. My 2nd choice is #4—long is a bit dressier, especially a solid dark dress.

They all look fabulous on you. I’d pick #3. Lucky you to have such great choices. Have fun!

#1. Agree that it is elegant but with a note of celebratory “fun” with the sleeves. I like that it has a little interest. 2 and 3 are so plain to me…and I just don’t do plain! 4 is nice as well but sounded like long is not expected so unless you just feel more comfortable in it I’d stick with #1!!

Very cool it’s in a presidential library!

My vote is for 3, a close runner up is 4! I’d avoid red unless it is encouraged. Bell sleeves of 1 would drive me batty. Have to watch out for them getting into food!

Great that you look so good in all 4 dresses. I kindof like the shoes.

@BunsenBurner - I know what you mean about the bell sleeves, but I still love them :joy:

Hahaha! My husband saw me looking at a bell sleeve top once and reminded me of the fairy tale that goes something like this. A beautiful and smart princess was transformed into a frog by her evil stepmother’s spell; somehow she turns back into her human self for a couple of hours, attends a big ball at the tsar’s palace, and charms everyone with turning chicken bones into swans and wine into a lake on which said swans floated. She did it by stuffing the bones into one bell sleeve of her ball gown and pouring wine into the other, and when she went dancing, she waved her arms, and the swans and the lake magically flew out of her sleeves! When her evil step sisters tried to copy her, they ended up spraying the guests with wine and showering them with chicken bones!

Well, I’m no princess… so no bell sleeves for me!

Honestly, they all look fantastic on you. I kind of like the sleeves on #1, but would probably opt for #2 or #3. I don’t love #4.
