Spent yesterday at a lake house with friends. There was a boomer in a bikini and she looked . . . like a boomer in a bikini. It was fine. She was pretty fit. Seemed to make her happy. Whatever.

Still trying to figure out how long skirts and dresses and Ralph Lauren western shirts are funky and for petites and/or trophy wives. Guess the aesthetic of the true fashion experts is beyond my grasp.

Well, I’m not wearing a “itzy bitzy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini” any time soon. I like the tankini sets. Cute tops worn with boy shorts. Some of the skirts look “old.”

Stopped at the outlets over the weekend and got some really cute basic tee-shirts at Tommy H. One with a deep v-neck in a nice dark salmon color. Less than 10 bucks each.

I’ve been living in black stretch fitness capris, tshirts and real comfy black patent leather flip flops. This is what you get when you work from home :)

I wish I could find the swim suit boy shorts more easily. I can never find them in the stores even if I start looking in spring. And I’m not willing to pay the prices of some of the catalogs I’ve seen where just the shorts are like $60!

toneranger, you’re doing better than I am in the work from home dressing department. I still make the effort, for the most part, when I leave the house. But a tank top and pyjama bottoms are seductively comfortable for sitting on the sofa, with a laptop, writing stuff…What would my mother think! She still changes for dinner regularly.

MomofWildChild - I tried them on with the super thin cotton button downs in short. Theoretically I liked the look, in practice I looked too much like I was wearing house cleaning clothes in nice colors. You know, the old workshirt you pull out when bleach is bound to be involved?

Ralph Lauren long denim skirts, plaid shirts and cowboy boots look fantastic on Ricky Lauren, Ralph’s wife. I look nothing like her and thus, would look terrible in her clothes. It’s a very specific look that not everyone can pull off. IMO, it requires a deep tan, chiseled features, long, straight hair and a lean, somewhat petite body.

I guess it’s the difference between looking chic and stylish, but not like you’re wearing a costume. This outfit would look like a costume on me!

Alumother- What I got to go with them was the really thin floral print button down blouse and I roll up the sleeves. It looks sloppy unless I wear a thin belt and tuck in the blouse. I also think a plain white t-shirt looks good with them.

Sorry to be snarky but sometimes CC is just too silly. This thread was sort of fun and now it feels very much as if the “Arbiters of Taste” aka “The Privileged” are setting us all straight.

If you are in TX and it is hot I would do a denim or other long skirt with boots, a little air up your skirt will help keep you cooler and they twirl so nicely on the dance floor ;)

Toneranger, that is a REALLY cute suit and a great price! Unfortunately, as my kids will tell you, I am anti-brown! Seriously, just HATE all things brown! I do black very well, but don’t own a thing brown. :(

I referred to her as “Ricky Lauren,” which is her actual name. Do you prefer a more formal address? Mrs. Lauren?

What’s your point? We’re throwing opinions and thoughts around - certainly not telling anyone what to wear. And for all I know, you would look incredible in aforementioned outfit.

None of these musings are meant to be personal attacks on your taste, and I’m truly sorry if you are offended.

So true. This is one thread where everyone can agree to disagree at times. I know people who dress in that upscale cowboy/western meets Switzerland look aka the “Gorsuch look” and look absolutely fab. Me, it would definitely look more like I was in a costume.

I completely agree that the long skirt/western wear look can come across as a costume. It CAN be pulled off, but it can also look like an imitation of the Ralph Lauren ads from the 80s. I used to love all that stuff. I guess I think the look is somewhat dated.

Ladies - all I can add to this discussion of western wear is: as long as your western outfit does not look like Marty’s clothes in Back to the Future III, you’ll be fine. :)

No Back to the Future garb, I promise! I’m the kind who feels silly even wearing one element like a hat or cowboy boots if it’s not my usual style, let alone putting it all together. But I didn’t want to stick out the other way, either.

I usually wear knee length skirts or just above, which I think looks best on me, though some very long and many shorter skirts are also in the stores right now. But I thought in general long skirts were supposed to look best on taller women, rather than petites? I definitely agree with the idea that dressing for your figure type is most flattering - I only wish that trends would take all those figure types into account in any one season which they most definitely do not.

I am reminded of the “How I Met Your Mother Episode” where Ted runs around trying to get proof that he can pull off wearing bright red cowboy boots.

I loved that Lauren cowboy look when it first came out. I had a fabulous corderoy skirt with buttons down the front and a ruffle. Made it myself from a Lauren pattern.

I think rodeo clothes look great on lanky - not just petite. I do think it’s hard to pull it off unless you are in the region or it’s current high fashion - like in the 80’s.

I’ve lived in Texas for 29 years and have yet to buy boots. (I’ve bought them for my two older kids…each for a school musical!) But I have bougt myself two “retro” western shirts that look kind of like this [Scully Ladies Black Retro Long Sleeve Shirt | Cavender’s Boot City](Sites-Cavenders-Site) They have the snaps and everything and I think they’re just too cute for words.
