Dressing Young (Part 1)

That’s hilarious! We would probably hire her here! We have a woman in our building whose “girls” are so gigantic that I can hardly fit in the elevator with them. There isn’t much she can wear to disguise them. She’s a large woman (not particularly fat, just large) but the guys can’t help but stare.

Speaking of bras…it must have been cold the day of this pic…

Button the darn shirt will you??

Yes, there are big girls and there are big girls in form-fitting stretchy tops and then there are big girls in white form-fitting stretchy tops and it is obviously a bit chilly.

(you don’t need big girls to need these!)

edit: cross post with toneranger!

I really wish we could be brutally honest in employment evaluations without fear of being sued. You should really be able to tell an employee, “make sure your nipples aren’t visible.” Instead, employers make up a “job related” reason to get rid of her.

MOWC, were you still in Dallas when that big sloppy female lawyer sued becauase she didn’t make partner and her firm actually said that part of it was appearance based? I actually sided with the firm, but the fix should have been a frank talk, shopping trip and a makeover. Sometimes a person’s appearance is so sloppy that it’s hard to introduce him/her to clients. But instead of making it have permanent career ramifications, I wish you could just say, “You’ve got to buy clothes that fit and do something with that hair!” (I’m not talking about a person’s level of attractiveness…I’m saying that a client has a reasonable expectation that their lawyer won’t look like she slept under a bridge.)

mp…I agree with you.

A couple of years ago, I interviewed a woman for a professional mgt job. I had the HARDEST time interviewing her because I just could not stop looking at her HAIR. Never saw anything like it. It was literally “bozo” hair. Or maybe that evil boss guy in Dilbert. Two huge frizzy triangles sticking straight out from her head. Horrendous. Otherwise, she was dressed fine and her credentials were good. My colleague later called to check with someone they knew at her workplace. First comment “You mean the one with the hair?” Somebody should tell her…

bookiemom, love the blazer - I went right ahead and ordered it!

My boss in Germany gave us a lecture about what to wear one day. He was very nice about it. He addressed the whole office, though I think he had one particular guy in mind. He explained that when he was young he had shoulder length hair and wore jeans and had to work twice as hard to get clients to believe he was serious. He was quite clear about what he expected. We didn’t have to cut our hair, but jeans without holes would be nice! As an architect I’ve always tried to look like I had some design sense, but that I also was practical enough that I could climb ladders when I needed to.

And I ordered the nipple thingies. I wear camisoles a lot (don’t need much support) but chilly days can be a problem.

Alas. You may remember the killer Gucci shoes I posted yesterday ($495 as I recall). Now there is not a single pair of wearable dressy black wedges even close to my price range that catches my eye. I have been spoiled for everything else!

I know! The worst I’ve seen was a guy, probably about 60 years old, interviewing to be a partner at our firm. He had on this jet black toupe that was the worst toupe I’ve ever seen…it was all I could think about…it looked like something Harvey Korman would have worn in a skit on the Carol Burnett show.

I really really wanted to send him an annonymous letter telling him to lose the toupe and by the way, almost no one has hair that black, even when they’re 20.

Toneranger, my nipple thingies need to be in a bra or they would fall off (they are basically molded silicone discs). But maybe you got some with adhesive?

yes, I got the sticky ones on Amazon :)

Inquiring minds will want to know if you like them, if they irritate your skin, etc.!!

yes, a bit concerned about the adhesive. I will report back!

missypie- I don’t remember that about the female non-partner. Must have been after I left.

Well, I am a happy girl. I found a cute sundress (that is NOT white) that I can wear to an upcoming outdoor wedding. I just think it is harder to decide what to wear when the event is outside. The setting for the wedding is lovely, it is a beautifully restored farmhouse that is now a bed and breakfast.

Here’s the dress:

the color is actually tangerine, it looks red in the photo. The best part is the color matches my favorite OPI pedicure polish perfectly! I have a great pair of wedge sandals & straw bag, so except for a couple more applications of my self tanner, I am ready to go!

cbug, sounds like you would be what some call, classic with a twist. I really recommend style blogs. There is a good one called Une Femme D’Un Certain Age. The blogger goes by Deja Pseu. Exceptionally nice person and her style might suit you. Just recently she posted this from Talbot’s. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9FDH1LdPm6U/TBBNgyWuQ-I/AAAAAAAAFhM/wHwOtbwIZRE/s1600/Talbots+topper.jpg</a>. Talbot’s is going modern - have even hired the model Linda Evangelista as spokesperson.

Does that look like your kind of thing?

I’m just getting back here to thank all of you for the insight and opinions on the “leggings and top” controversy in my house. Thanks for saving me from myself!

wip…very cute dress! Ralph Lauren does a nice job. Have fun at the wedding (BTW years back, I wore a white cotton dress with red belt and accessories to a wedding…and another guest had exactly the same outfit…just a slightly different style dress…yikes!).

Back to RL, unfortunately, I have not yet worn the Black/White RL Trellis dress I bought a while back. It’s a bit clingy on top and I need about 10 more lbs to come off before I’m comfortable. It’s the “back” view that really got me (did someone say here that you should always check on how things look from the back?) Hopefully, when I’m ready to go, it will still fit!

wip- Love the RL dress.
alumother-loved that look, too.

It makes me feel good to see these clothes.

OTOH- Rompers are back. D’s friend (19yo, tall & thin) looked very cute in one when I saw her the other day. For the rest of us, no.

Alumother – wow, you’re good! This is right on the money. I’d like to check this blog out more but I can’t get to it from the picture. How do I find it?
