OK, so who’s wearing leggings and tunics?

I bought a tunic last weekend but D tells me that I am too old for leggings. I will wear it with my skinny jeans and am looking for some black skinny cut pants.

I have been wearing yoga pants, camisoles and hoodies from target for the past month. Wondering why wear anything else? All about comfort right now for me . . . I’ll be interviewing for jobs in a new place soon. My interview suit is seven years old but very good quality. Still fits. But I really need a new one, right? Can’t you get away with separates now involving some sort of jacket? That could be so much more useful.

hey sewhappy, we’re wearing the same stuff! Mine is not all from target…but none of it cost me much.

I’m starting interviewing too…and found the need to buy a new suit. Got one from an Ann Taylor outlet. Dark charcoal gray. Shorter fitted jacket with nicely fitted pants. Tiny little ruffles at the top of the sleeves…just to give it a little kick…but it’s still very conservative. I can wear them as separates too. Paid around $150…not bad.

I think the closed shoe policy comes about because it’s too hard to define which open toed shoes are okay. Flip flops are obviously out, but how else to define which are okay? I most definitely do not wear open toed shoes to work. At any time of year.

“OK, so who’s wearing leggings and tunics?”

I have a couple of tunic-like tops. I wear them with skinny jeans, but I have not had the courage to try leggings.

I recently went through some old photos (1990s) of me in leggings, and I’m never going that route again. I’m thin, so that’s not the problem – just not a good look for me. Slim jeans, yes. Leggings, absolutely not. Tunics – doubtful.

I had one or two friends that did the leggins/tunic thing last summer but it’s not a great look except for elementary age girls…haven’t seen it in my group since that summer. If it’s not already on the way out it soon will be. I was pregnant when the trend came round in the 80s so it “worked” for me then…sort of.

Even my thin D doesn’t look as great in leggings as she does in most other clothing, so she doesn’t bother. She does look great in skinny jeans (the only kind she owns).

Have rarely seen many who actually look OK, much less good or great in leggings. It’s really an over-rated look and should be carefully examined front, side & back BEFORE deciding it works for the wearer.

The Kendall Farr blog I mentioned earlier in this thread (I can’t link, you can google it) just had another post on the subject of leggings. She includes photos of dos and don’ts. The Vera Wang and Donna Karan pics are supposedly the DO version of this look for women our age. Done in this way, leggings can be totally fine, IMO, although I don’t wear them much outside of exercise. I remember those hand painted sweatshirt tunics and leggings that were popular in the 90s. The tops were SO oversized and huge it was ridiculous!

Thanks, roshke! I bookmarked her blog.

This I can wear. With boots:

And this top resembles one of my tunic-like tops, except mine has a drawstring belt:

me not so much
so what do I wear to my guitar lesson tomorrow?
I don’t want to look too young, but I don’t want to look like Betty White either.

Oh who am I kidding- I wear whatever is on top of the pile.

BB - the Kenneth Cole tunic looks a lot like one I bought at Macy’s last week.

I love that Eileen Fisher outfit, Bunsen. Very sleek.

I wore black leggings last year instead of tights with boots and a skirt. I find legggings are stretchier and more comfy than tights. I bought a gray pair this year to wear with my gray skirt.

I used to wear the oversized sweater with leggings look in the late 80s-early 90s. My H disliked the leggings so much that he said if I got rid of that look, I could go buy all new pants. So I did!

Same opinion from my DH. When leggings were first popular he said he wasn’t sure why anyone who had the figure to wear the look would want to cover up a slim waist and hips. I also like the Eileen Fisher outfit, very Audrey Hepburn-like, but I think I will stick to skinny jeans and an occasional long cardigan.

Don’t like the look of tunics…leggings or not. I’ve been losing weight so why would I cover myself in a loose “preggy” top? That said, I just love the sleek long cardigans and vests. I wore a black one over skinny jeans with boots last year and loved the look. Hides a lot of flaws without looking baggy. Love that vest posted by BB.

A quick question on another topic. I have coarse, kind of frizzy hair and my hairdresser keeps pushing a keratin treatment. Expensive. Anyone do this? I tried an OTC “smoothing” product (by Garnier) and the smell of the “serum” had me running for the exits. Awful. Even though my hair came out smoother, I don’t think I could handle it again. Any suggestions for cheap non-toxic solutions?

The older I get, the more and more I am convinced that “misses” clothing is desinged for some kind of aliens. Extremely uncomfortable cut. I talked to many others of my age and they say the same. In addtion, most do not look good at all. Granted, I am not shopping at most expensive places and I hate shopping and do not have any patience for it. So, most of the time (I shop for myself only when my D. sends me to pick up something for her or I need to get presents for any family memeber(s)), I end up buying my clothe from Junior racks. I am not having skinny young figure by no means, just average in height, weight and all other measurements and I am much older than most parents on CC.

You are probably short waisted like I am miamidap. While I dont wear the * barely covering the pubic bone* cut that some jeans come in, I do like the lower than waist cut, cause that means they aren’t under my chin!

Won’t wear leggings- Im not six and while I admit I used to wear Eileen Fisher, I think it is while well made, still ridiculously overpriced for the style and lack of color choices.

I pretty much live in jeans- although I have this vintage camelhair coat of my grandmothers that would go great with the MadMen era clothing out now- but where am I going to wear a shirtwaist dress? I work outside!

Wearing leggings instead of tights is something I would consider doing. Hmm, maybe I should see if I have any in a box somewhere left over from the 90s. But I refuse to wear tunics.

I saw a teenager yesterday who wore leggings underneath a skin-tight, super-short mini skirt. From my vantage point, the only purpose the leggings served were to cover up her undies, which would have shown if she had bent over 3 inches.

About two years ago (Nov. 2008), husband and I spent a Friday night at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC, and did a lot of people watching. Many women were wearing leggings and super-short tunics, dresses or skirts (all black, of course). I remember turning to my husband then and saying – yuck, leggings are back.

Did anyone watch a reality show called “The Fashion Show” a year or so ago? Fern Mallis, who created Fashion Week, looked great every week in 3/4 length tunics and leggings with flats. I like leggings in the same way I like tights: they cover up pudgy knees and extend the line of the outfit. On me, they’re fine as long as the top hits mid-thigh or lower. But I’m still afraid to wear them; what if one of you laughs at me? :)
