Dressing Young (Part 1)

I like the Eileen Fisher outfit in #2871. But I am too short to pull it off. I think you would need to be tall and willowy. I’m working on the willowy, but will never be tall!

I do wear leggings with a skirt boots. I add socks and am nice and warm in the winter.

Leggings and tunics are comfortable and can be flattering–especially if you are an “apple” with relatively slim legs and hips, which makes it really, really hard to find pants that fit–but now that I have lost a significant amount of weight I have no intention of wearing them again. Too tent-like. I would opt for a long fitted cardigan instead of a tunic, unless the tunic was body-skimming.

My challenge is finding something to wear when it gets colder. I’d like to wear skirts, just above the knee, but I really hate panty hose, and the leggings under a skirt look seems too much like an 80s Madonna video to me. Any suggestions?

I think that overweight people who are trying to hide the extra pounds by wearing baggy clothes like “classic” tunics are doing themselves a huge disservice -such clothes are not designed to be slimming; such people look much better in properly fitted, structured clothes. Shirt-like tunics made of flowy, quality fabrics, OTOH, accentuate slimmer figures, especially if worn with nice belts.

On a slightly different subject… I have been “stalking” a designer bag on e-bay for days, but have not made any bids on it because I was afraid that it might tun out to be a fake. So I’ve done some online research to educate myself about this particular designer and came across a site called the Purse Forum. Talk about people being seriously obsessed with handbags! They chat about purses with the same intensity we chat about Harvard admissions! :stuck_out_tongue: But I was able to figure out that I needed to stay away from that bag. Phew…

I wear skirts made for traveling ( out of nylon, wool or fleece) with cotton or wool tights & boots. Smartwool makes nice ones- that is the only brand I can remember off hand.

I have found clothes that are targeting the travel market- are often made better than reg dept store wear because they are expected to hold up through being washed in hotel sinks or on the side of a river bank. ;)

[I bought these boots last year, made in Spain & I was always looking for an excuse to wear them](http://www.sarenza.co.uk/Art-kio-693-s758042-p0000025644?ectrans=1</a>)

Consolation: you can wear a skirt with leggings and boots. The leggings then look like tights, but I find them much more comfortable. The waist is softer than tights and because you just wear regular socks under your boots, you don’t get that tugging feeling from tights. (I have long legs and tights usually aren’t long enough for me.)

^^^that’s what I meant in 2882! But I left the “and” out of “skirt and boots” so it made little sense.

But that should be a new fashion term - skirtboots. It would be a category of boots that look great with skirts and long dresses, as opposed to pantboots.

Quick! Mafool, trademark the term “skirtboot” and team up with a shoe seller to market boots to ladies who like to wear leggings with skirts :)

Speaking of shoes… We all heard the term “power suit”. Apparently, wedge shoes are now “power shoes”:

[Power Shoes Turn Heads on the Web](http://shine.yahoo.com/channel/beauty/power-shoes-turn-heads-on-the-web-2371978/)

Wedges are so “in”. I love it!

Emerald,
“You are probably short waisted like I am miamidap.” - Amazing, you got it. So, you have the same problem. yes, all "missus’ pants are up under my b…s. I hate jeans, though, and they are not allowed at work. In a summer, i have to wear skirt / dress, cannot mess with pants after swimming (6am before work). I wear a lot of clothes that my D. done wearing, they are the most comfy. I do not like new stuff at all.

It is so funny that now wedges are " in" because the only heels I wear are platform/wedges from Born- I bought three pair a couple years ago because I was so thrilled to find shoes that were comfortable, but that were a little dressed up.
I never did the pointy pointy thing- I felt like an elf.
;)

^^LOL, EK! I too felt like an elf in pointy toes. With age my Size 8.5 feet gradually became Size 9.5, so nowadays pointy-toe shoes look like cross country skis on me

My very first “grownup” shoe was a wedge espadrille-type sandal. My mom broke her rule of “no high heels before high school” and allowed me to get them (whopping 2 inch heels) when I was still in middle school! I treasured those cheap shoes as if they were a designer masterpiece. :)

I’m still looking for wedge boots that are cute yet reasonably priced and water- and KC Metro-proof. Still looking…

EK, I love Born shoes! Would you share which dressed up wedges you have?

We went to D’s first game as a freshman cheerleader. The row ahead of us was filled with cute freshman girls in their “uniform” - long straightened hair, short shorts, t-shirt. Then another person came and sat by them - long straightened hair, short shorts, t-shirt…we thought it was another 14 year old until she turned around and we saw that she was the 50-ish mom of one of the girls. NO, you SHOULD NOT wear your 14 year old D’s clothes, even if you can fit into them.

Regarding skirt boots…are we talking high boots or short boots? Heels? Is the “folds at the ankle” look a good one?

My favorite footgear in the winter is black Dansko clogs. They actually look okay with some skirts with tights…and might be okay with the leggings under skirts, although the socks would present a problem. My only boots these days are Bean’s. Strictly functional. I gave up wearing leather boots because they were too expensive, too hot, and too easily wrecked by salted sidewalks and roads.

I refuse to wear high heels. I really dislike wedges–those “power shoes” are hideous to me, sorry–it would be nice to find some kind of alternative…

Consolation, on the Oprah’s “shoe and handbag intervention” show the shoe fashion expert said it was perfectly OK to wear booties with skirts - if the booties hit just below or at the the ankle, they make the legs look longer. And the booties don’t have to have high heels! Of course, that does not help with the sock problem. Here is my opinion on the other types of boots paired with skirts. Slouchy boots work great with pencil skirts, but I don’t think that slouchy boots look good with flowy or flared skirts (I’d pair these with a flowy skirt: [Dansko Penelope](<a href=“No results for Dansko penelope | Zappos.com”>No results for Dansko penelope | Zappos.com)). I’m not a fashion expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt :)

I am trying to imagine myself in short booties and a skirt. My ankles are quite slender. I’m thinking it would look odd on me ( [Minnie Mouse Pictures and Images](http://www.free-extras.com/images/minnie_mouse-4962.htm) ), but maybe I’ll try it out.

Speaking of wedges … just read this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/24/nyregion/24bigcity.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=wedge%20shoes&st=cse</a>.</p>

Apparently these Kate Spade wedges are the rage with young politicians.

fireandrain, thanks for th article! We can do better and cheaper than those $300 Kate Spade shoes ;):

Here is a peep toe wedge for ladies who do not teach (or work in a lab :)):

Mafool: I remember that shoe expert saying something about booties being fitted at the ankle. The whole idea is to create a “figure skater” look, not a “pencil-in-a-glass” (or Minnie) look: [Wearing booties with skirts and dresses](Wearing booties with skirts and dresses - YLF)

and the Kate Spade wedges are (surprise!) sold out!
