Dressing Young (Part 1)

I won’t go back to high-waisted either. I’ve looked at pictures of me in the 80s and 90s – I look so much heavier because of that style. I have narrow hips and a thick waist, so to get a high-waisted pant to close, I have to wear a size that means the fabric around my hips and thighs just swims.

I’ve seen hints of the higher waisted trend in the stores for a little while already , kind of like they are testing the waters. If they do become more popular, I hope that it remains just one option, like bootcut vs. skinny legs and not an exclusive thing since I can’t wear them that high, either. I was really glad when the empire waist trend was no longer seen on everything - this would be nearly as bad for me!

Actually, I guess I’m blind but I find high-waisted trousers quite slimming – no muffin top!

I also feel as if they elongate my overall look. I have a pair from BCBG that I seem to wear constantly. I don’t really visualize high-waisted in jeans, though. I see them more as a tailored wider-legged look. Think Kate Hepburn in Philadelphia Story when she wears trousers - NOT the awful stuff from the 80s.

Will say that I’ve seen too many mature moms having way too much belly fat showing. For me it’s the fit more than the style – and that touch of spandex.

Me too. I LOVE med/low rise, skinny leg jeans. Regular jeans, especially those cut for “curvy” women, look like clown pants on me. Even boot cut looks awful. I stopped wearing jeans when the high waist, big behind style came in, and only started wearing them again this year.

sewhappy did I really spell it “heals”? !!!

I love the low waisted Banana Republic cords and jeans…can’t bear the thought of going back to a higher waist. I feel like I can’t breathe in those!

Nah . . . I’m just a lousy speller . . . especially here where I refuse to proofread myself (have to do it constantly in life).

Got out my BCBG high waisted pants and am trying to figure out what is working so well about them. First, they are a really nice sort of gabardine fabric. They have a cuff and just a little bit of pleating at the top. They don’t poof out across the tummy but lie flat. I’d post a photo link but can’t find it online. Bought these last spring actually on a ridiculous discount. They have a cuff. I wear them with a simple fitted white blouse (J. Crew) and one of my daughter’s skinny belts. Flats. And a Trouve (hope I’m spelling it right) jacket from Nordstrom. I have to say that this outfit covers a multitude of sins.

I really am not responding well to the high waisted jeans flooding the market although the NYDJ jeans tend to be high waisted on me and that’s okay because I usually wear them with a fairly long top (not tucked it).

Just saying the high waisted thing can be nice. Morning Glory was a really forgettable movie but Diane Keaton (now in her 60s, I believe) is still adorable and she wears them throughout. Of course, she’s Diane Keaton - but she is not the skinny girl she once was.

^I think what you have described (classic, high waisted, dressy trouser ala Katherine Hepburn) can look very nice. Especially on certain body types (like Katherine Hepburn’s - tall and thin  ). I haven’t seen Morning Glory but Diane Keaton has always been on the very thin side. Looks like she still is. Here’s a link to her at the Morning Glory premiere:

Jessica Simpson was criticized for wearing high-waisted jeans - they were saying they were ‘mom jeans’. They definitely made her look chunky. Though she looked like she had gained weight even without the jeans.

I think the trousers with the proper fit can look great but I don’t think high waisted jeans or other heavy material would look good on me, though.

Does anyone here wear white dress shoes in the spring and summer with dresses?

I haven’t in years but am considering buying a pair but I’m not sure if I would wear them much and I’m even less sure they are in style.

I bought a pair of white Aerosole platforms last summer thinking … lol, I’m never going to wear THESE . . . and wore them a great deal. They are canvas on top and I was able to sort of sponge them clean. They looked really nice with cropped pants, skirts and at the beach at night.

MomLive, I do not think I have seen too many pure white pumps (other than in bridal sections) but there are plenty of white flats and sandals in the catalogs of major retailers. I personally like cream, light beige or sand colored pumps better than white (and they hide specks of dust better than white shoes).

Ok Fashionistas…D1 is getting married in August. She wants a killer pair of ORANGE shoes to wear under her wedding dress. We haven’t found anything worthy yet. A little bling is a good thing but we could add shoes clips. Anyone want to do some research??? :)

That’s what I thought. Good suggestion on the cream or other light colored pumps. I’ll look for those next spring. Thanks.

NMinn, that is an interesting twist. Orange bridal shoes? I think I saw some really cool Louboutins on one of the discount sites I like to browse. My iPhone battery is almost kaput, so when I get a chance to recharge it, I will look for the shoes. Paging Gourmetmom - your help with finding orange shoes is much appreciated!!

You can search by color on Zappos–not a whole lot of orange there, but a couple of dressy heels.

Isn’t the classic thing to do if you want colored shoes to get peau de soie pumps and dye them? Do people still do that? I wonder if it is possible to get them in non-dowdy styles…

Yes, Consolation, that’s what I was thinking, too, and was going to post but my iPhone screen went black. This could work if NMinn’s D doesn’t plan on wearing her wedding shoes after the big event, however, if she wants to use the shoes for other occasions, she might want to invest in a nice pair made of leather. I do not see the Louboutins I was talking about, but as MommaJ mentioned, many websites will let you filter your search results by color, like this one:
[Discount designer shoes|THE OUTNET](http://www.theoutnet.com/Shop/Shoes?colourFilter=Orange)

I have seen orange shoes - just might not be the season to find them right now. Come spring they will probably show up. It’s quite common these days for brides to do the pop of color thing on their feet. You can go visit Style Me Pretty if you like to look at pretty weddings. I certainly do.

In other news, the Jessica Simpson dress, short, copper sequins, visible zipper and all, totally rocked. I got multiple compliments, young women walking up to me just to tell me how great it was. In my own heart, it was a little young for me, since I don’t generally dress for impact like that. However, with black tights, a black cotton knit ruffled cardigan, and black 70 Louboutins, i.e. not very high heels, it was dignified enough.

That dress was a bigger hit than the Prada, or Narciso Rodriguez, which I wore at other times during the conference. And I think it was because it was a) fun b) accessible c) a little sexy. Just like Jessica. No wonder she is making $750M/year on her fashions.

The two shoe brands that come to my mind when I think of orange shoes are Prada and Kate Spade. Last summer both had lots of orange shoes in their collections. Keep an eye on Bluefly, Yoox and Outnet websites - the summer leftovers should show up there soon (read the return policies carefully - they vary greatly; Bluefly gives you 60 days to figure out if you want your new shoes or not, but the other two want your returns within a couple of weeks or sooner).

Alumother - nice to hear that your dress was a total success. I overheard two ladies discussing JS pumps at the shoe department of a local Nordy’s, “I love her shoes! She certainly knows how to make a comfortable heel - because that’s what she wears all the time!”

Thanks for the off season tip re the orange shoes Bunsen! We have been looking for the past few weeks for them. Dyed shoes are last resort.
